Friend of mine wants to muck about with RAW images from his new camera. Anyone care to suggest a free/cheap 'shallow end of the pool" Windows app he would find useful?

Check here.. Lots of good information on dealing with all HDRI formats.. http://www.hdrlabs.com/news/index.php A great free application is Picurenaut which is available from this site. http://www.hdrlabs.com/picturenaut/index.html Also there is Playmemories from Sony. Really good software for editing and organizing pictures.. It's free and has cloud storage.. http://guide.playmemoriesonline.com/learnmore/en_US/applications.html I use it with my camera.

There's also Corel After Shot which is cheap, but really fast and produces great results. I would have to say that I like it a bit more than LightRoom as far as workflow is concerned, and speed, and at times I regret changing over, however Adobe's processing tech does look better with little effort in my opinion. I haven't tried After Shot 2 yet, but if it is anything like the first version, nothing processes RAW to jpeg faster, hands down.

I have also used Raw Therapee, and like it as well, but again have not used it for a while.

Here's the link for After Shot if interested. http://www.aftershotpro.com/en/products/aftershot/?gclid=CjwKEAjw7MuqBRC2nNacqJmIpT0SJABQXAOtlWhsVRu mPiOtJLQoEzfQBqkJM8v46eoyC9xL1AS4qxoC2vPw_wcB

STEVE STEVE STEVE! I know sometimes you hate me or at least don't love me ...I hope I have never given any valid cause for you to hold this completely incorrect impression, Shawn. Thanks for the tip (and thanks to all ...I've been keeping a close eye on this thread).

After using the current version of AfterShot Pro and Raw Therapee the past couple of days, I would definitely go with Raw Therapee. It's really in depth and will play well with many raw formats including DNG, which ASP2 won't, so I have chosen my alternative to Adobe.

I hope it is ok to extend the OP's question.

What about an alternative to Photoshop? Something with editable masks, spot healing brush and color managed workflow?
(Does anybody know if Fusion can do this brush type healing thing (I know it's main purpose is not photo editing, but maybe ?))

There is GIMP which is free over here http://www.gimp.org/ and here is the user manual in English http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/ and Deutsch http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/de/index.html for you to look at for full features list.

Of course I would have to throw in Corel Paint Shop Pro, which is pretty decent as well.

Neither one of these have the performance that PhotoShop has though.

Hm,
after reading the article about the PS alternatives it seems so, that if one needs CMYK, softproof simulation, good colorspace handling and a decent RAW editor build in, Photoshop remains to be the best solution. So might be that I stick to my CS6 and wait if Adobe ever comes back to a buy instead of rent model. But I donwloaded Rawtherapie and was impressed. Speed and feature wise it is a monster. Even comes with non destructive editing. Really very impressing RAW solution.

When you combine Raw Therapee with Photoline for image editing you have your solution. Photoline does offer CMYK, Lab, proper colour management (including soft proofing), and opens RAW files for processing. Raw Therapee can be set up to open Photoline after developing. And Photoline supports full 16 and 32 bit per channel.

I missed Photoline. Looks very good. Seems to be way faster than PS. I will have a deeper look into it. And it is just 59 €. That would be a steal.
Thanks for the hint.

Version 19 will be out within a week or by the end of next week. Some great workflow improvements, and definitely worth it.

edit: and you can change the colourful icons and light GUI to a dark one with grey icons, FYI.

How to change the GUI colors to dark was the first feature I searched for ;-)

You seem to know PL very well. May I ask if it is also possible to change the color of the rulers?
Could not find a setting in the preferences.

Odd, in my case the rulers adjust to dark mode:
128339

I am running the latest beta, though. Did you restart Photoline?

Yep, did a restart. Anyway it's not a show stopper.

The new version V19 is almost due for release - should be fixed by next week. I recall that the previous version still had some issues in regards to the dark GUI. These have been fixed in V19.
