What are bump maps, I know they make something completely flat to alittle lumpy, (or whatever word).
How do you use them?

they don't actually make anything bumpy, they just make the surface look bumpy. You use a grayscale image and apply it to the surface. White raises the surface, black lowers it and many levels of gray inbetween.

It's great for small details but it's no substitute for modeling. As soon as you turn a model to the side, the bumps will disappear as they have no actual dimension.

If you want to actually deform the surface, you would use a displacement map but that's another question entirely.
