Is there a way to select several objects and group them (a.k.a create a parent null object at the center of the selection)?

Also, when a parent null is selected, is it possible to show all children objects as selected (e.g. highlighted wireframe)?

I think there is a create group command somewhere, but I don't think it will highlight everything in the group as you only select a null with children objects not a group.

When you will click item in new Scene Editor left listview, and RMB, there is context menu "Selection > Select child items (recursive)"

Click little button on right of the main item pop-up list (on the left from Properties). Window will appear where you can create group of items.

Create Group - https://www.lightwave3d.com/assets/plugins/entry/create-group/
ef SelectChildItems - http://people.dsv.su.se/~dadu9329/evenflow3d/index.php - you can assign it to key for fast shortcut.
