The bottom shape looks like a subdivided box shape with the middle of the sides pulled up and a taper in the middle. The top is just a squashed sphere.

not really, they're connected. it's a square turning into a circle. it's a spandex wrapped cocktail table.

I would start with a disc shape at the top, then where it needs to square off, I'd flatten the ring of points at the bottom so there are 4 straight sides. Then extend that ring of points to make the bottom.

this is the basic skeleton of the shape. i'm not sure i could get it clean enough by flattening a circle.

How about a simple bridge from disc to square?

This is what I came up with by flattening the sides of a circle.

i just sub patched it and finished it. for some reason sub patching had slipped out of my mind. maybe it's early onset alzheimers.
