Thanks in advance for any help.

I'll be buying a new laptop this weekend. Want to keep it under $1500 but want to verify that Lightwave will run fine. Won't be rendering on laptop... mainly modeling and layout.

My biggest concern is graphics memory. I learned the hard way that Lightwave crashes with only 8MB. Is 32MB enough or should I only look at a machines with 64MB?

Going from a Sony 900mhz Duron to an HP, Compaq, Toshiba, or perhaps another Sony... definately P4 though. Any advice?

I'd say RAM first, processor speed second, and third a decent video card. 32M video RAM should be sufficient -- I'd go with a video card that does OpenGL reasonably well, like an Nvidia or ATI.

It seems laptops usually lack RAM compared to their desktop siblings -- the one I'm on right now is 512 M, and when I bought it a year ago it was top of the line.

At least, that's how I see it for a laptop.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 7000 which is 96MB RAM, 300 MHz processor and 32 MB ATI Vid Card, and it ran Lightwave 7.5 fine. That laptop was replaced by a Gateway 600 XL [I won it in a Contest (http://www.imagereality.com/Images/NewtekImages/Winner.jpg) last October] and it runs fine on their as well. So I would say anything that you buy today or tomorrow will run Lightwave just fine.

I just purchased a Sony VAIO with an NVIDIA FX Go5600 64MB card. I should be getting it thursday as soon as fedex gets it here. It comes with a 2.8ghz Pent 4 533(FSB) 256mb ram and Windows XP Pro for $1,900.

You can get a cheaper version for $1,169 and it comes with an NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go 32MB card with a 2.4ghz Pent 4 chip.

I bought mine from www.newegg.com I'd say they are one of the best computer parts shops on the internet. They usualy have great deals and they offer to ship using Fed Ex saver shipping which ends up costing you nothing and it usualy just takes 3 - 4 buisness days as long as your in the U.S.
