View Full Version : I hope I'm wrong but I think we've lost a LW user-Riff Masteroff

03-11-2015, 03:27 PM
Hadn't seen Riff on Skype for a while and saw he hadn't been active on the forums since before the new year which is unusal. If you knew Riff at all, you know he liked to engage people and would talk your ear off sometimes. Did a search on his name and I knew he lived in Virginia and came up with this obituary. Name, job, location and date seemed right I can't imagine this is a mistake. Obituary is here: http://www.heritagefl.com/story/2015/02/06/life-cycles/obituary-riff-masteroff/3984.html

Riff was a really nice guy who shared my enthusiasm for LightWave and LWCAD. He often shared his work with me and others on Skype on things he was working on in the construction industry and certainly had no qualms about stating his opinion on matters. You will be missed Riff!

Talked with him so many times on skype. Always looked up to him because he was one of the few guys that used LW to aid the process of building real, precise things and not smoke and mirrors like most of us do.

Will miss his perspective on events and enthusiasm to think differently.

Now that really sucks! He was such a regular here on the forums and I can't believe he's gone. And at only 66?

That obit sounds like it has the right info for "our" Riff. Yes, he will definitely be missed. Another sad day in the LW community.

Extremely sad to hear. I will miss him.

RIP Riff. really sad to read this. He was a nice guy at the skype chat.

03-11-2015, 04:36 PM
Please tell me this isn't true.

Was chatting to him not long ago.

03-11-2015, 06:52 PM
Such a shame, a really nice bloke, I chatted with him often. He will be missed.

03-11-2015, 07:23 PM
I wish I had meet him in person. He will be missed.

03-11-2015, 07:45 PM
I am saddened by this.

Hope the family is ok

Didn't know him very well; but I knew him to be a Lightwave regular, and evangelist. Very sad to see him pass on, though he's in a better place now. Maybe he's talking to Larry right now?

RIP Riff...

Used have some good long chats about Lightwave used for REAL building work..he shared some of his work and insight on the LW Skype group
he was a real character and will be missed...he could talk the rear legs off a donkey if the conversation veered to politics too!

miss you Riff

I must've missed out on this guy. Sad news though if correct, of course.
Without trying to take the thread off topic... there's a LW Skype Group??

03-11-2015, 11:33 PM
yes, there is a "private" LW Skype Group, you have to be invited.
but sorry, not a member there, so i can't invite anyone,

i did get an invite not long ago though, but too busy...

Ah, that's sad news. I know it's unlikely that they'll see this, but my condolences to Riff's family.

That's sad news indeed, was that him in his avatar? It often reminded me of a friend I had in school, even though there would be a fifty year difference.

It must have been horrible to search wondering about his absence and then come across the obituary. I didn't speak with him but of all the people you know of who pass on, those in this community are the ones I feel more strongly.

As Cardboard says, though they may not see this, my condolences to his family.

Chatted with him about construction and music a lot on skype. Gutted. RIP Riff.

03-12-2015, 05:12 AM
That's very sad news, indeed. RIP.

It's a shame to see him go that early, quite the character and a top bloke.

I like to think that he's somewhere better now, woodworking happily. :)

i will miss that guy.... :/

( said that out loud to myself, so though, why not type it... )

some of his work... >

If true, this is sad news indeed. The first post I remember of Riff's was this one: http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?98633-The-reason-why-I-got-into-3d&highlight=

It really highlighted a great talent beyond the LightWave side which many would be happy to have alone. Condolences to his family and friends.

I was just looking at some of his structural renders the other day. It's sad news for sure.

He seemed to be a very nice person. What a pity.

03-12-2015, 05:41 PM
This is very sad. Riff was a genuinely decent, wry guy, and I'll miss his presence here.

...ripped, flayed & shredded. After my father-in-law who was like a 2nd Dad - Riff was like Dad no.3  ...I need to try and make contact with the family :( ...see if there's a way to restore old skype conversations from a backup before my computer frekin' crashed as well :compbeati :bangwall: ...although I imagine Riff would've relayed his core stories & pictures with others... geh. Really needed to meet him in person, see his house - so close to [hey! i'm hopping on a plane now!] as well - [flattened by a logging truck smiley] KO.

...I need to try and make contact with the family...

If you make contact I'd like to send condolences.

03-13-2015, 02:07 PM
yes, if someone does, it would be good if they could share the link to this page...

Only just heard the sad news.

Riff - fond of Itzhak Perlman's work on violin, grateful to have been able to share that delight with him, within the realm of music...
