Just wondering if anyone has used this or even knew about this.

https://lmms.io/

its a free music maker - with some pretty nice features. So now you can make royalty free music for your lightwave animations.

I've been looking for something to make music with, and was not finding anything i really liked.
does anyone recommend music making software?

Depends on what you mean with "make music" ;o) I use Magix Music Maker, it's pretty easy to make ok music for people without much knowledge about music, if you have the skills to make quality music yourself I would think it's useless, they keep pretty low prices.

LMMS has been around a while and there are many sequencer/audio editors out there. It is comparable to Garageband on Mac. You can find free apps on a cover disc of magazines like Electronic Musician.

As with any tool, the quality comes from the user. Microsoft Word is not a "great American novel maker". :)

While LMMS is free, a musician still needs to deal with licensing of samples, soundfonts, existing compositions, etc assembled within. The more popular/accessible music creation apps (like Garageband) come with a library of royalty-free material to start working with.

See also: Reaper, Sony Cinescore and Adobe Audition (CS2 version might be found for "free" online because of their activation bungle).

I own Ableton Live and Studio One and I can recommend both. Both are not cheap but if you are are serious about making music it is well invested money.

EDIT: As raymondtrace mention: Reaper is the cheapest professional solution you can legally get.

soundfonts are cool, I have an older computer that needs fixing, it had a soundblaster card that is needed or soundblaster compatible cards for playing soundfonts, I could mix Roland D50 sounds when feeding the synth to the input jacks and mix with soundfonts sound, and I could edit the soundfonts pitch attack etc, unfortunatly I do not have that set up and working now, and my newer computer do not have equally good or compatible card for soundfonts, I should have invested in that maybe....It may be possilbe to transfer the creative soundblaster card to the newer computer, but I am a little afraid of screwing up hardware setups.

Soundfonts can be great if you obtain the right sounds etc, really high quality samples..or cheaper free ones.

Also check out Instant Orchestra and Reaper (mentioned):

http://www.garritan.com/products/instant-orchestra/

http://www.reaper.fm/

Personally I like something that can do MIDI, loops and also record sound.

And we have a winner. this stuff sounds the best i've heard.

lmmo sounds like technoish because of its instruments.

garritan has amazing instruments and sounds way better.
$175 isn't bad for its instant orchestra. Anyone have this product?

By the way, I've started learning UNITY - so Everything i've learned comes into play.
LIghtwave fbx outputted assets
coding
and soundeffects and music - (which is why i'm looking for a great music maker)

__

can you use the garritan sounds in lmmo?

IO is definitely on my to-buy list, after LW2015. It loads in Garage Band as a plug-in and seems to be exactly what I need. For real composers with knowledge of orchestration and lot of time, I guess that personal orchestra is better, but for quick nice symphonic soundtrack, IO is certainly the way to go.

Should load in any host that supports Vst instruments. Cubase Reaper, Sonar, Acid Pro and so on. Lmms supports Vst so yes. Basically I think IO loads up in the Aria player which is a VSt instrument that can load their sound libraries.

IO sounds great, I definitely would love to get it. I have used n-track for my DAW in the past. I liked it. I forgot why I went with it over reaper, but IIRC it was the cheaper one at the time. I think though reaper is now cheaper if you don't make make more than $20k and can buy the $60 license. Ntrack has a standard version and an EX version for $49 and $89 respectively. http://en.ntrack.com/index.php

this one magiclight? 89 pounds = 132.50 plus 20% vat = $159
https://shop.magix.com/en_GB/magix/basket/?_pA=39124x0649&_sT=default&_pOBS=true&backlink=lsHtkKiQnNyX4KGNrtmXmIXS29Nbh6tP4OTf38hN3 dPax96U&_ga=1.135991096.888389982.1426201283

The current standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%.
does this mean i get charged 20% of the cost of 89 pounds?

Dan, is that made by putting loops together or by laying down notes? They sound quite nice, better than the lmmo stuff i heard.. (the instruments are too electronic.)

ok
http://www.magix.com/us/samplitude-music-studio/detail/ $99 us website - $25 at fries so. huge savings there.
http://www.magix.com/us/support/know-how/tutorial-videos/samplitude-music-studio/ - description

so i'm still not sure which one to get, but for $25 bucks it might be a fun alternative to lmmo.
It also might replace audacity as well it looks.

anyone have this? the 25$ version

edit- ok, its 25 bucks only till the 14th. so - seems like one of their super deals - 75% off.

You're confusing software and content. These DAW programs do the same thing. The difference you hear is from the audio samples and synthesizers used. As VST plugins, loops and sampling libraries are mostly interchangeable, you can get the same sound from these DAW apps. The commercial products you see just have this content bundled/configured for you in advance. No matter which tool you choose, you may further invest in additional sounds. Commercial vendors will give you a base supply of audio and then offer an expansion sound set for additional cost ( ex: http://www.magix.com/us/soundpools-media-packages/soundpool-dvd-collection-20/ )

Since LMMS is not in the business of selling audio content, you need to assemble it on your own from free or commercial sources.

I can recommend KVR Audio as a forum for such questions - tons of threads about plugins, sample libraries, synths, DAWs, hardware...
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/

Soundfonts can now be used in many VST plugins, no special hardware needed. A very good one and free, from the makers of the Aria Engine Garitan uses:
http://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/

A huge audio library (10 GB) for games is currently free:
http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2015/03/12/sonniss-free-game-sounds/
That blog is recommended for a good overview over free plugins and libraries.

My favourite free player to go through sample libraries:
http://resonic.at/

I personally used lots of different DAWs over the years from free to expensive and finally found my home in Bitwig Studio:
http://www.bitwig.com/

But people are so different and there are so many tools, it's hard to recommend something.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks for the link to the huge royalty free sound fx library. I highly recommend downloading it while they are giving it away. It's gone on April 2, 2015. It has lots of usable sound FX for many types of projects.

127476 -this is what the entrance to a huge electronics store called frys in burbank looks like.
All the frys have a theme, the burbank one is alien crash site, and is AWESOME!

well, ran to frys and got the samplitud music studio for 27 bucks. (steam has it for 100, and thier website is also the same, so its $75 bucks off nice)
will check it out over the weekend. The otherone was 59 and had 3000 loops.
not sure if samplitude has any loops.
well see.

thanks for all the links - thats exactly the kind of stuff i'm looking for.

I got into midi using VST for awhile. On Mac, there's Garage Band (so-called free with Mac OSX), which basically sucks and I couldn't use it, although I know several people who swear by it. I mostly swore at it. I went with Logic Pro ($200) and did a ton of midi/VST compositions and grooves of various kinds. I use Garritan Personal Orchestra (not free), SampleTank (not free), and what comes with Logic, which is a lot of grooves, sound effects, etc.

Then Apple updated the MacOS, which made Logic Pro stop working. Thanks, Apple. Now they want $200 more so I can use Logic, an app I already bought. Hmmm ...

But so far (on the Mac side), I personally haven't been satisfied with any music generating software that's free.

When did this happen ? Why did it stop working ?
I used Soundtrack a lot in the older days, and it stopped working with Leopard or Snow Leopard, I think, like Final Cut Express and Motion 1. So now I'm using only Garage Band. It's far from being perfect, but it's enough for my needs, right now. I'll add Instant Orchestra at some point, but I don't plan to go for Logic Pro now. (OTHO Hand, I've bought FCP X and Motion 5). Maybe I'll buy Finale PrintMusic or Finale Songwriter one day, because Garage Band is not good at all at writing notes.

I used to love going to Fry's. Nowadays, I just hate driving anywhere to buy things. Amazon and Newegg has really spoiled me. :p

BTW, the one in El Segundo has a Polynesian theme (tikis, torches, grass huts, etc.). I don't think it's as nice as the one in Burbank or Woodland Hills but I used to go there sometimes because it's just down the road from the Rhythm campus.

Interesting the ones in So Cal seem to be the only ones with themes. Funny in LA you don't look twice at a UFO crashed into the side of the building. Kind of like... ah OK yeah whatever and then go inside. I mean Universal Studios is nearby... lol. Kind of a Hollywood thing. I mean if a real ET grey walked down Hollywood Blvd. completely naked no one would look twice.

I think Logic Pro stopped working when I updated from 10.6.8 to 10.8.6.

The other really great weapon in the audio arsenal for me has been Audio Kontrol 1, a 2-in (stereo), 4-out A to D / D to A converter that can sample at 192 mhz/24-bit, which makes huge files, but when compressed down to usable size, retains all harmonics for a very believable sound. It's perfect for midi/VST one-stereo-channel-at-a-time audio production. I'm not sure if its drivers are supported under the Apple parasite, Yose-mite. If I ever do buy another Logic Pro, I will try to fire up the Audio Kontrol 1 again. I just checked Native Instruments, and it seems they discontinued it. Not sure what its replacement might be ...
