...and work properly with radiosity? If not does anyone know if there are third party HV alternatives that can.

Also is it possible to bake surface HV into geometry?

...if you are using shadow maps, there will be ONLY one 'level' to the shadow maps. For example, if you have HVs and several layers of geometry, the shadow will only appear between the two furthest from the camera. Wierd but true. For raytraced shadows it works fine.

When I made the original post I set up a test on one machine(a G4 Mac) but did not test on my other Mac or PC. On those all was fine. I have no idea why it didn't work the fist time. Oh well.
