Overnight, a few of you reported receiving some spam by Private Message. Thanks for doing so. This appears to have been a variant of something we have seen before and blocked. Measures have been taken that we hope will prevent this from happening again (time will tell), and we apologize for the intrusion.

Oh so I'm not the only one.

Far from it. Basically, if you get a pm along the lines of "How to earn a lot of money just sitting in front of your computer?", consider it dealt with already.

I got me one too, mentioning the very obvious...
Brian the spammer is right though about it, sit long enough and learn lightwave and those who goes pro will earn some money.

I got one too. Saw it and immediately deleted it. I'm not that gullible!!

Glad it's being handled.

I got one too. Saw it and immediately deleted it.Thanks. At this point, there's no need to do anything else. We're not able to 'batch delete' all of the private messages (since they're private, right?), so people who haven't been here for a day or two will continue to find them. But there is no further need to report them, unless something new comes up. Its really all just a single incident.

I have received a PM from 'brain_smasher'. Spam. It would be very much appreciated if this pest is removed from the forum.

Yep, got the same PM from 'brain_smasher' too, so I just deleted it.

Infact, it was this thread that alerted me to check my Inbox so thanks to all :)

It would be very much appreciated if this pest is removed from the forum. It was already done the day this thread was started. You're just a late arrival, I'm afraid.

Weird thing is i got the exact same spam from another user on another forum. Looks like this was a quite widespread attack!

Weird thing is i got the exact same spam from another user on another forum.Probably not really another user, though, right? Just another user name. You can see why it it's almost impossible to completely prevent these things. There are countless devious schemes. You really must wonder why anyone bothers. The very last people I would ever knowingly do business with are those who would use an intrusive promotional mechanism like this.

well I just meant it wasn't the same username, obviously not a real person or artist. I don't know either. Just because it's from a PM it doesn't stop it looking like obvious spam. I guess some people must be gullible or they wouldn't do it.

well I just meant it wasn't the same username, obviously not a real person or artist.Exactly right. These things are typically part of a larger campaign ... and we have taken steps to make it rather difficult for such a campaign to continue (we hope).

I'd like to think we see a lot less of these things than elsewhere. I don't really visit other forums much any more, but we try to walk a fine balance between prevention and being overly restrictive in ways that might impinge on access to and enjoyment of the forum by legitimate users. Sadly, this means that the occasional breach will occur, but the alternative would involve draconian measures that would inevitably affect some innocent parties along with the bot brigade.
