I hope this is no stupid question, I am new to Lightwave and I see that there are a lot of plugins available, but it's difficult to know what is good and bad or of no use, some plugins have been replaced by builtin functions in later versions of Lightwave also I think, so tips on some of the more useful plugins would be nice or if there are any good websites that has some information about this maybe ?

These are some of the more important ones. There's a lot more out there free and commercial. Knowing what type of work you're into would help.

Plugins are like drug in medicine.
You use it, when you need it,
or it can save your time in comparison to normal workflow.
But better to have it in advance, than running to pharmacy.. Receiving commercial plugin is 24-48h delay.

f.e. if you are running into IFF sub-chunk limitation, i.e.
to bypass limitation you should use TrueArt's Global Material http://globalmaterials.trueart.eu or TrueGroup.

f.e. if you have dozen of image/surface maps to bake, instead of wasting a lot of time on manual setting up, you can use TrueArt's Batch Baking Camera http://batchbakingcamera.trueart.eu

I can go on and on. Each problem has some plugin addressing it.

Welcome to Lightwave. Firstly decide what you really want to do. Model? Animate? Texture? Lightwave is a very comprehensive programme in itself, a good all rounder. For fundamentals you can do it all: model, rig, animate and render. It already has many great features already built in like Genoma, Bullet and Instancing, and the renderer is capable of superb results. Once you've mastered the fundamentals - which can take serious time and patience depending on your intentions - you may find you need to try out tools that take the program in more specialised directions. For example, in modelling, LWCad, TrueArt and 3rd Powers tools are extremely useful for hard and soft body modelling. In rigging and animation, RHiggit is highly specialised. For texturing DP nodes are invaluable. There are also external renderers out there which cater for specialist tastes. Check out the Index of plugins on Lightwave 3d's site, they're all recommended for various jobs but IMHO you're better off getting to know the essentials first.

Ok, thanks for the links, I will have a look at them.

I have used Carrara a lot before, it's a pretty good beast, but it's getting old and the updates are a bit slow, so I decided to get something else and ended up with LightWave, I don't like Autodesk licenses and it's a bit expensive anyway and C4D is also a bit expensive if you want it with dynamics and all stuff you get in LightWave so it had to be LW, it's just for hobby projects so I cannot spend an infinite amount of money on it and the more I read from the 2200 page manual the more I realize that there are a ton of features already in there.

I did get my hands on Dan Ablan's "LightWave 3D v10", not that new but the latest I could find and then I printed (most) of the manual (maybe not such a good idea, it's almost a foot of papers now), so I will not have any problems keeping myself busy for a while.

I do all kinds of stuff, but I do both modeling and animation, and I like to use all features ;o) if it's in there it should be used....

IFW2 shaders are very useful and not that expensive. There are some IFW2 videos in this forum and on youtube.

The nice thing about the plugin/lscript structure in Lightwave. If it's compiled for your .exe (32,64) 99.99% of them are going to work. No matter how old or what version it was compiled for. (nothing is 100%) :)
