When you say indie has commercial limitations you mean that if you earn 100K plus each year you cannot use it commercially...hell, if I made that money, I would consider really bad on my side not purchasing the FX license!
Regarding render limits HD 1080 for animations and unlimited for stills is pretty darn useable, IMHO.
Itīs true though that with a Octane render plugin coming from Juanjo himself, you wonīt be able to use it with the Indie version due to no third party rendering allowed.

Indeed so, Im starting to get feelings of releasing my purse for it, itīs a matter of time though, I still would like to use and learn the apprentice mode a bit more, before I can tell if I can be able to work with pleasure and get decent
stuff out of it...then the pricing is a steal really.

I couldn't get a handle on what each version does. Don't you need FX to do any of the cool stuff? That's not included in the apprentice version is it?

From what i understand the apprentice version is the full version with every thing in it. You are limited to render size, watermark? and the scene files arnt compatible with the commercial version.

There site explains it pretty well I think.

As kivi3d says, houdini apprentice program has all the fx tools houdiniFX does, the houdini version does not..I reckon houdini version was aimed for those working with other stuff than advanced FX mainly.

the aprentice has render size limits and watermark and it isnīt compatible with other houdini formats, and you can not export fbx, only import.
export of mdd, and obj works at least

And of course, you are not allowed to use it in commercial ways, only for learning and evaluation, I think they have reached a good balance here, I can test almost everything in houdini and see if I like it, how hard it is to learn etc..
and without timelimits or functions being disabled after a time, so if I get comfy with it, then I can start to make demos without watermarks and even do commercial work with it, for a very low price per year at 499usd.
And if I suddenly get a job for a studior or something needin high vfx stuff and they need a houdinier :) then you may be up to it, and it could be of interest to buy the full works.

After I have tried out modo I think I will go back and boost aprentice up again.

Houdini indie seem to have all the FX goodies too, it has a different fileformat and asset format not compatible with other houdini versions it seems, that might cause issues.
and it has only HD limit for animations, no limits in stills.
it also has a GUI watermark, not sure how that looks..but its just for the UI not rendered images and animations, and thereīs no support for 3rd party renderers like octane.
it also is limited to 1 mantra tokens, which I currently do not understand fully.

Compare list of houdini versions..

the gui watermark is a little message on the corner of the OpenGL viewport which says "limited commercial", so really non-obstrusive. You even forget itīs there.

one mantra token means render on one machine....no network render

not sure if that disables amazon cloud render....

You do have access using HQueue on Amazon’s EC2 compute cloud with Houdini Indy.

Did they change the rental scheme? Would houdini still stop working if you stop paying?

After 12 months without renewal Houdini Indy goes into non-commercial mode so if you make any edits, your files will be saved to the format that Apprentice uses instead.
