I'm happy to have the first LightWave 3D tutorial on Digital Tutors. This tutorial is on modeling a realistic Bell 407 helicopter.

The tutorial arrives Monday Jan, 19th. Here is a sneak peek!

Just curious. Why the DT route instead of self publishing or going through Liberty3d.com?

DT asked me to do a tutorial, Liberty didn't.

That is absolutely fantastic! I am subscribed to DT - can't wait. For all the criticism of Lightwave's marketing this is the way to go. It makes me glad that I chose Lightwave.

Oh when it comes out I'll be telling everyone to check it out. Watch out mailman and Starbucks barristas!

a little more tutorials up there, and it will indeed serve as ..Lightwave is being out there, and is to be taken in account...I think.

been waiting a looooong time for a LW tutorial on DT, congratulations Phil.

Finally we have some well deserved presence there so it's great for LW and this awesome community.

I wanted to ask (since I'm looking for a new PC), are those specs on your signature your current setup? Did you create that tutorial with them?

Actually they're not, I should update my sig. Those are from my 6 year old computer heh. The currents ones are, Win Pro8.1, Core i7, 3.4 GHz, 16GB RAM, nVidia GT640.

This is it if you're interested.

Well done, I hope this is the first of many and I would definately re-join them just for the LW Tuts. As an aside I notice since they were taken over by Pluralsight that their ZBrush tutorials have dried up. What with SimplyLightwave seemingly being dead (again) it would be fantastic to have regular LW tuts on DT :-)

thanks for your reply Phil, really appreciated.

After a lot of research I went with this (very similar to yours) setup:
http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-8700/pd?oc=fdcwgs114h&model_id=xps-8700

I guess I don't really "NEED" a multisuperduper hyperthreading turbo-overclocked quad dual octa Xeon v6 with a gazillion terabytes of DDR2000x ram, 10 TB SSD in turbobeast mode and 4 dual SLI super Titan Xtreme Hulk pro deluxe setup. Not to mention the oveclockable case AND PSU of course. :)

I guess that's enough for me. Thanks again and good luck, looking forward to more DT tutorials.

Well it sure helps with rendering. Last night I started a render before going to bed. This morning I woke up to find that I had hit F9 instead of F10 so I only got 1 frame. It's a 9 hour render so I sure wish I had more!

Congratulations Philbert! I was about to reactivate my DT account to take a Motion Builder refresher, so I'll be sure to check out your course too.

(I guess this scratches one 'anti-Lightwave' conspiracy theory.) :)

I've just been to the DT site but can't find the tutorial in the "new tutorials each day" section, nor can I see Lightwave listed on the list of software. It was definately released yesterday?

They had told me it was going to be on the 19th but maybe they scheduled that without realizing it was a holiday so they wouldn't be in the office. regardless, it's up there now.

Everyone please go check it out I hope to see as many views as possible!

Phil - when you go to Software - they don't list Lightwave. Yours is at least 1 right? It might be good to let them know to add it in there.

Philbert
01-20-2015, 01:27 PM
Yeah I assume they're still updating the site but I'm letting them know anyway. They also can add a LW logo for the icons on your profile showing which apps you use.

I wish there will be lightwave special effects tutorials in the future

Surrealist.
01-21-2015, 07:39 PM
There will be more. DT is serious about this. Actually I would have done one for them last summer and it was a tough decision but I had to back out because I was way too busy at my studio. Hard one. But I knew they were also talking to other artists. And this looks to be a great tut, so Philbert, congrats!

I think since they have also been talking to other artists, it is something you'll see more of. I may make a run for one in the future if I can get some more time... oh well.

Yeah perhaps..there are some already made though on liberty3d ..if you consider Kelly Myers fluids and explosions, fire and some other stuff..that is probably what you want to get more in to for highest realism..on earth:)
space shots. and hv voxels and particles is still working ok, with real photage clips sometimes....there was Sean M. Jackson making space explosions and destruction of space craft at kurv studios, unfortunatly there was a lot of things screwing that up, and kurv studios ended I think, so it is probably not availbable more..I donīt
think Sean M Jackson has them available either or the rights to them..could have been useful if they were put up on digital tutors..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2VFxt57EJo

I would like to see Liberty3d enhance the way they present their available tutorials, as of today I think it is stacked historicly in several pages in some sort of blog style,(could be wrong?)
I would prefer to have a web cell form or something to the left for example and a scroll list, that would provide a full view more easier on their whole range of tutorials..rather than clicking at the bottom of the page trough older entries etc, just make all videos more available to get an immediate overview at the very first page of the liberty training.

Nice one Philbert, I'll definitely watch. Glad it's on DT to open up more LW options and break down some barriers perhaps.

@Farhad No, you can watch the free intro and that counts toward my numbers. Although there is a free trial of you do want to watch the whole thing.

@Jason Thanks. Yeah people, myself included, we're begging them to get LW stuff for a long time.

I love helicopters so I'm going to sign up just to watch it.

I find it odd that they still don't have Lightwave listed in the software list or on the blog.

Philbert
01-24-2015, 07:21 PM
Awesome! I mentioned the software thing to them and was told "we have it taken care of" several days ago. Clearly it's not so maybe that means the people in charge of that have been alerted.

I'd like to see a tutorial on Corona and other effects in LW. And one that includes just little tips, like using the graph editor to adjust the size of lens flares when zooming the camera. Or better yet, code that fixes that...

Cageman
01-27-2015, 01:30 PM
Congrats Philbert! :)

This is good! LW needs exposure, not becoming a closed community where "everything" steams from one place.

Philbert
01-27-2015, 02:16 PM
Thanks Cageman

@Shrox I don't think DT will do one with little tips. They seem to be interested in big full projects. Also for me at least they were looking for tutorials for experienced LW users, not new people.

Just finished watching the tutorial and I must say that's it's VERY well done and I learned quite a bit. I've been using LW since v3 on the Amiga but never had need for many of the modeling tools used in this tute AND didn't know how to use them. Kudos to Phil for making this great tutorial that is easy to follow and well-paced!

Philbert

That's great. I felt like it was going to be too repetitive because they required that I show everything. In later parts I did pause the recording during some of the reptitive stuff and thankfully they didn't complain. Some of that wold have added an extra hour of just me deleting polys and such.

hope you don't mind I quoted you.

Funny you mention that, because when you started doing some of the cleanup I actually groaned thinking "oh god, I hope he doesn't ---" and then you cut it and started the next area. VERY much appreciated. Once you've gone over it and showed what you were doing it was sufficient and you didn't need to reshow it again and again. IMO I don't think there was any fluff or unnecessary talking - just meat. (Although I am a vegetarian, I didn't mind. ;) )

Any way to promote LW and more training, that's great!

Actually looking forward to more tutorials. Hopefully this will be a trend at Digital Tutors. Best of luck!

I've watched a bit of this and what I've seen so far is superb. Just a slight pity we couldn't get hold of the blueprint images as with the free 72 hour thing you can't download project files. In the long run for me though no big deal as I will re-activate my account with them. Well done Philbert, really great job on both the model and your teaching style.

Just Google "Helicopter Blueprints" and there are tons of images just like Phil used - perhaps you can even find the same one - and then follow along with the tute. I like the fact that you can use it for ANY copter (etc.) I wish I had some free time to do something similar from scratch. One of these days... ;)

Yeah talking to them directly didn't work. Apparently if you want something done you have to tweet about it. I said "It's frustrating that @Digital_Tutors doesn't have LightWave in their software list even though they teach it." then I got a reply and it was fixed within hours.

I think I mentioned in the tutorial that the blueprints came form http://the-blueprints.com . You can just search for Bell 407 and find the ones I used.

If anyone is interested, I have a code to give out for 30 days to watch this tutorial. I just need an email address so you can PM me or contact me some other way (Twitter: @philnolan3d , email: phil (at) philnolan3d (dot) com , Google+: +Phil Nolan).

BTW I finally got them to update the cover image for the tutorial, no more solid red helicopter on black background.
