View Full Version : Viewpoint exporter works under LW7.5!!

Hi all,
I got a letter about the new Viewpoint pricing and bm. It is targeted at the developers to pay an annual fee of $995 to publish unlimited amounts of int'3d. There is a early starter discount to bring the price to $495.

Although this sounds great and looks like some sanity has arrived at viewpoint, remember, this is an annual fee so the times of Viewpoint making it difficult are not totally over.

Anyway this led me over to their site to see what was happening. I found that the software had not been updated for over a year and there are not many new examples.

However I did read a thread that claimed the Viewpoint exporter works in LW7.5!
No, no, no, sorry it broke after 6.5 and it even has the 6.5 label on the Viewpoint site.
But then what if ...
I checked it out on a simple scene and yes it does work.

I never knew.

Anyway, if like me you didn't know here it is:

Lightwave can export scenes to mts, mtz and mtx.
Apparently the OS needs to be Win2000.

i'm still amazed that metacreations dumped their 3d and paint apps to concentrate on "web 3d"....didn't work out by the look of it...

they should have stuck with cararra, bryce, soap,super goo, power show, poser and painter..those were/are ace apps and i loved the idea that you bought the app and not the platform it ran on..you have the mac and windows version on the same disc.

and newtek took up the idea of dual versions with lightwave duo usb versions of lightwave..way to go newtek!!!

totally agree I'm still a proud owner of the box set

Bryce, Poser 4 and Canoma

Canoma was really good for the money pitty Adobe bought it and from what I can gather used it as the bases of After Effects 3D tool set :(

I still play with Poser 3 and 3d Panter sometimes... I think it'd be totally cool if Lightwave could implement some sort of 3d Paint system similar to what 3d Painter had! I don't know exactly who bought the 3d Painter Copyrights, but I think it may be the guys runing Deep Paint or ZBrush that took it over since the interface on those programs seem somewhat similar... either way, it'd be cool if Lightwave could do something similar to those, and implement a sort of real time Photoshop type paint on the surface and see the results real time wysiwig style! :)

Hmm, whenever I go to export something it tries to bring up the viewpoint window and lightwave freezes ... well it just can't seem to bring up the window anyway and i can't do anythign with lightwave .. maybe I should try again ...

Hi Karmacop,
It seems to be very slow!

I first tried it with my current scene but it seemed to freeze LW.

I then tried it with a very simple scene containing just a block and it worked ok.

So I guess it is very slow.

Exporting single models is working fine for me in 7.5c. I'm just waiting for them to added bone suport for lw exporter and weighting info for skinning to VET.

This new pricing news really is great though. I remember contacting viewpoint about a year ago asking about what pricing and It was one of the weirdest conversations I've ever had. To make a long story short I ended up going with a company that doesnt have as much experience in the 3d realm but has the best support and company model I can think of... macromedia

I agree, I tried it but when it came to commercial stuff I found it difficult to understand the charging and impossible to explain to clients.

It is one of the best renderers for int 3D but others do a better overall product. I think the user must still go to XML coding to do anything beyond navigation. This is odd considering the product is several years old now.

A few years ago they were hailing it as the Flash for 3D. Hopefully now they can get a a little closer to that goal.

Hi~ guys
I am a 3D modeler with Lightwave and also coding Viewpoint XML Using Viewpoint exporter is very convenience,but it has a little problem with recoding the *.mtx and reoptimization the *.mtz.

If you want to create complex project with Viewpoint Teachnology, the better way is export *.obj format to max, and then export *.ase to Viewpoint Scene Builder.But if you just want a sample object display , the Viewpoint exporter is the good chose.

Hay I didn't think VET suported bone deformation. I know the LW exporter doen't support bones but i though VET didn't have deformation at all.

Hi Castius:

The VET do support the bone deformation,but only in Poser.
The sample character that I rigged in Poser
and can got some grounps like weight map in LW.
You can animate any motion with the character or give it some mocap action
This is the only way to make VET support the bone deformation
