I found a little time to put these together. Nothing too complicated, hope you find them useful!

Spline Control and Streamers, using the Inertia plugin:

Spline Control and Instances to create a static trail - bit like in those films that leave a dotted line behind when traveling across a map:

As always, if anyone has (quicker/more flexible) alternative methods then I'd be happy to hear them!

Oh wow, 3D dashes, combined with AE could be really useful, same with the streamer. Looks like something even I could follow and implement so thank you.

Very interesting. That is a great idea to use follower to set the z position of the spline control item. Also I saw that you used spline control on the spline item nodes to set their rotation. Then you key framed them and removed the spline control. Could you explain a little more what that step is doing?

Thanks for this. Time for some map animations!

Thanks lertola2, can't claim all this to myself! Rebel Hill has a great Spline Control tute and I got the Follower technique that from there. You can't do it without in that technique as the arrow movement along the spline and the dash Instances on the spline need a common reference point to work.

The alignment tip came from a LALWUG presentation by Jen/celshader when Spline Control first came out. Not entirely sure what's going on, but it works!

Does the revealing of the dashes work if the path loops in on itself? It doesn't appear to be working for me because the reveal is based on one channel versus the position of the motion null along the path.

Hi Ernest. I'll check it in the morning as I can't remember off the top of my head. They both reference the position of another object to keep a uniform point of reference. My spline didn't loop but I think it should still work if everything starts from 0. I'll check.....

I've uploaded the scene. I've "closed looped" the Spline and it seems to work - but only if I specify the amount of Instances. If I use Distribute on the Spline in the Instance Generator then I get a misalignment. Hopefully that's the issue.

Dotted lines on maps are my favourite! I always loved that effect.
