View Full Version : Normal Map broken LW 2015.1 Win8.1?

Well, I've spent the better part of the day on this problem. At first I thought it was a 3dCoat problem but then I generated a Normal Map from Zbrush with the same artifact issues. I took this object to my Macbook Pro and it renders correctly with LW 2015.1

When I save the scene in LW 2015.1 on the Mac and open it up on Win 8.1 it renders correctly. If I save the scene on the PC and open it up on the Mac, artifacts show up. Now mind you, that both scenes are very simple and all the settings are the same AND they both reference the same object. I'm baffled.

Essentially, I cannot set up a new scene on Win 8.1 with Normal mapped objects from 3dCoat or ZBrush. I first have to create the scene on my 2010 Macbook Pro laptop.

Another thing of note, is that my older scenes with Normal mapped objects render correctly with LW 2015.1 on Win 8.1. I wonder why the Normal Map Nodal preview is blue in the offending scene, but a light purple in the correct scene.

Well, not only has LW 2015.1 randomly adopted my LW 11.6.3 color scheme, it seems to be working properly ... for now. I'm glad I took screen captures and saved the corrupted scene.

Are you using color-space conversion?

Did you disabled color-space conversion on normal map image file?
It looks too bright to me = it has been passed through color-space converting routine..

Yes, I'm wondering if you just need to make sure it's set to Linear in the image properties, could it be that simple?

Changing the Color Space RGB of the Normal Map from Default to Linear fixed the issue in the corrupt scene. But what is strange is that in the other scene, it's set on Default and works. Weird.

After investigating a little further, I noticed that the color spaces for each scene are totally different. I've never messed with the Color Space settings before.

I corrected the color space in the offending scene and it still appears dark.

It seems I need to be aware of the color space before creating a new scene. I'm not sure how it changed the first time - very odd. But everything seems to be going well as I put LW 2015.1 through it's paces creating quick tests with 3dcoat and Zbrush. I have to say Zbrush was much easier to setup than from what I remember a couple years ago (folders were missing and such).

Change the colorspace RGB setting in the image editor for your normal map from default to linear. The over all colorspace settings can stay the same. I was having the same issue with an export from 3D Coat until I did this.

Set to default

Set to linear

It doesn't matter what the global setting are for some reason, and some images may need to have this changed in the image editor.

Good to know! Thanks Andrew.

Hello, Iīve the same problem with a map taken off from Zbrush. Iīve tested all the alternatives read here but the issue persist. Imīusing Lightwave 2015.3 and Windows 7.

Iīve changed the color space of LW in different ways like you did in the threads but nothing.

With the normal map activated but not the GI it looks like any light is not on.

Some one knows whatīs could be going on? Itīs killing me!

Thank you very much!!!

tuovni, read about difference between object-space normal maps, and tangent-space normal maps
Your looks like object-space normal map. But chikega and Amurrell were using tangent-space normal map.
Download DPont nodes (from http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/main_en.htm ) and it should have node allowing reading this kind of normal map.

Is this something related to Mikk tangent?

Thank you very much Sensei, I donīt know how I didnīt figure out the difference. Tremendous mistake.

Now it works perfect!
