Mari Indie looks interesting.

Would eventually like to see a LW3DG offering on Steam.

Well, with Mari Indie limited to 4K, at that price, I'll stick with substance painter. Modo indie being limited to 100k polls, it's also way below me needs. I will rather spare money for LW2015.

a limit of 7k if you export to OBJ or FBX...
7000 polys won't get you far these days...
edit: i see they fixed it, the limit is now 100k... that's better...

Third-party plugin loading disabled,
a slight minus there...

Do they both, Mari and Modo allow commercial use for a freelancer/individual artist? Modo 100k limit is for exported file only or for a scene too? So I could forget about replicators and hairs?

ps. By th way, somebody know why the crossgrade sticky thread being started 9-12-14 , basically 3 days ago, already expired?

That's import/export limitations not within the program.

I bought MODO Steam Edition when it was on sale for about $80 and The Foundry gave me a free upgrade to the Indie version - so I'm not complaining. :D

lol no kidding. Actually I am looking at getting a subscription for a couple of months and really give Modo a fair shake as I have not really been able to do that. That is, ha ha ha when I can spare the time....:)

I can only guess it's the 12th of September. Not 9th of December. So it shouldn't be stickied at all.

oh. probably. September. Too bad :(

Does that indi Modo allow to import and work with something more than 100k? Replicate things? Save a file with more than 100k? In a word is the restriction for export only?

It is import/export.

Somebody on Foundry forum just answered it's only export. I am to lazy to download and test it myself :)

I am in hope to use Modo as texture baker an need to load hi-poly objects there + instances and hairs. If I can't I have no interest.

Looks like their 3d party tool to transfer and edit vertex (shading) normals is also not working due to scripting restriction. is it so?

it'd be cool to use MeshFusion with Modo, but since Modo Indie doesn't support plugins, no can do! :/
http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/modo/plugins/meshfusion

but even then, that'd be $900 with limitations, so i guess i'd rather go C4D then with it's fantastic rounding/chamfer tool

Curious what's fantastic about C4d chamfer ? Tried it several years ago and didn't fin anything especially exiting. It seriously lacks gamedev specific tools I needed.

For some weird reason the gamedev being a half of all CG keeps to be almost invisible for 3d soft developers, LW including.

Several years ago probably explains that. New in C4Dr15..... http://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/new_in_cinema_4d_r15_modeling

Even at that absurdly good deal, I don't see myself grabbing it. Any polygons I need to get into Unity is best created (least troublesome to me) in LightWave and if any sculpting painting ever occurs, 3D-Coat should keep me covered. It does show though that everyone is jumping on the "indie" version of their tools. Even Houdini is indie and available in the Unity Asset Store.

Yes exactly, this is a new trend. But Modo Indie is very definitely aimed at indie game developers. If you are working on more high-end game stuff, likely you are using something else, and this will not be enough
