Very interesting. A few years ago Houdini was on my list. I had a chance to ask some very pointed questions via email with the support team to find out about the character animation side of things.

Not impressed I went another way.

But they are making some headway here. Looking real good so far.

And considering they have an indie version.... LW3D Group? What is it going to be? I think it is just a matter of time. A free Modeler? Indie LW? Anything?

Rubbing my hands to have a new Softimage toolset in the future and see AutoCrap pay, because right now Maya is sitting on Animation too undisputed.

"Let's just say that the changes are being spearheaded by two former XSI developers.
They are doing great things and what is great is how they are bringing their knowledge
and experience and melding it with Houdini technology - for instance the new animation layers use CHOPS at it's core.

There will be a lot more to the story when Jan 15 rolls along..."

Just installed my houdini 14 aup version .. many tiny changes all over the UI .. really well done. Also like the daily build very much. Last time I reported a bug, it was fixed within three days and I was able to download the build .. mybe NT should consider a similar build process with daily and production builds ..

It's a whole different paradigm dulo. Houdini development is very heavy on engineering and their releases schedule look open-source alike. No one else out there has this continuous build release. Only 3D-Coat comes to mind has another app having builds being spit fast, but even so... Lool at those sample numbers: Houdini 13.0.615, etc. While other things can be asked of LWG development, this is not one, especially not now...

Very nice! the point counts are as impressive to dynamics as zbrush poly counts are to modeling.

Thanks for the links.

I think the interest on the animation side for me - and a lot of people - is in support for things like animation layers and editing of mocap data. Just in general tools on the animation side. This is getting interesting because Maya also has some ex-XSI guys so there are some promising updates in the works with Maya as well.

But if they can really make animation attractive in Houdini, that is huge. That will be a slam dunk for a lot of people. And increase competition which is always good. That said there is also the Houdini Engine for Maya... interesting times.

Right now the problem is not so much the rigging in Houdini, but the Animation workflows and support.

After my testing period is over 21 days left on lightwavef 2015, I have modo and houdini apprentice to go through, I have some older apprentice version to fiddle with, but havenīt had time to check the newer houdini versions, what caught my eye in this , it was the crowd tools, and the dynamics and especially the bacon got my mouth watering:)

Only so little time, but I will definitly try out houdini 14 apprentice.
