View Full Version : Gear/Cog Generator Recommendations

I need to create a network of moving cogs, can anyone recommend a generator? It doesn't have to be 3d, something that generates vectors/eps would be fine, it just needs to all fit together with the cogs aligned and to proportion. C4d has a nice one built in, but don't have that. Perhaps there's an online tool somewhere? Has to work in a Mac :D

Maybe this? (Outputs to DXF) http://hessmer.org/gears/InvoluteSpurGearBuilder.html

I've used the Modeler tool but haven't found it useful for lining up lots of cogs of varying sizes. I'm going for a internal shot of a watch so ideally want them all nicely packed and lining up.

Thanks for the pointer, Wickedup. Good start, anything that can add more than 2 at a time?

You could follow this http://makezine.com/2010/06/28/make-your-own-gears/ which uses the Gear extension in Inkscape

It looks like some people have done it via mel and python in Maya. I suppose it should be doable in Modeler via python as well.

I'll keep looking. This is c4d's implementation of it, which is annoyingly lovely. Out of my budget at the mo.

Displacement?

You can change the number and size of the gears by changing the texture value in layout.

Thanks for the Blender suggestion.

XswampyX, that's bloody clever (again)! Did you have to calculate how different sized wheels would fit together?

Did it by eye, it's a bit rough actually. My UV map for the sides of the gear isn't the full UV size, but it was just a proof of concept.

Thanks. :D

I had to play around with some gears! What else to do a saturday afternoon :D ?

No 3rd party plugins was harmed, nor used, during the production.

Slartbartfast, sorry to have spoilt your weekend (or should that be - put a cog in your weekend!).

You know what I'm going to ask now - what's going on there? Thought Bullet initially but don't think it is.

No worries, here is the scene. I made it a little bit more userfriendly. If you make own gears, make notes of the radius of each gear. Make the inner and outer radius smaller/larger than your choice here. For instance, if you want to make a gear with radius 1 m (and say 20 teeth), make the inner radius .95 and the outer 1.05. Another gear may be 3m radius with 60 teeth. Then just make it 2.95/3.05m.
After you've done all your gears you have to apply motion modifier/nodal motion to all gears except the master gear. And you also have to cascade it, like shown in this scene. And put in the correct radius for each gear. It should be easier than it sounds. Just have a look in nodal motion editor.
If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I wonder if you can use the bounding box info in one of the extended item info node to automatically set the radius? Can't check ATM as I have a big render running...
