Dear Friends:

I was just watching town of the living dead, and I found out they had trouble with a specific fire fx.
3 people were walking towards the camera while a boat (in the lake) behind them had to explode.
They used real explosives but the effect did not work.
Now I want to know, how hard is to make a boat explode with lightwave combined with the
video footage ?
I can make an explosion with lightwave (use pyromania clip art mixed with particles and hypervoxel smoke)
but how hard is to mix it with the video footage-the boat in the video ?
Thank you !!!

It's definitely possible. It's done all the time in movies and television fx. Matching the set lighting and making the item look realistic are important.

Since you say the fx were practical in the shot, what made them not work?

Hi:
they used real explosives (amateurs special fx ) but instead of exploding, they fizzled and white smoke
came out.

Well I suppose that would be on the pyro team and budget. Sometimes I think explosions are too big. If life was a movie you'd think everything out there was transporting c4.

Canīt be that hard for the actual explosion, if you have acess to the proper pre filmed pyroshot that is that could match it, I think what could be the hard part that sells the shot, that is the debri hitting the water and the splashes from that.
and explosion on a boat would probably have the exploding force pushing the water beneath it and thus splashing up water all around it too.

Yes..those are nice and all free...general principles should translate well over to other fluid systems like turbulenceFD, just some different names, and ways to set particle radius etc...Im pretty sure you can get almost equally good explosions with turbulenceFD..though the thread starter seem to aim for using real photage from pyromania, and as such you can only do so much with it...and you need to have the right explosions to match the live plate..but if you do ..that might be the best thing of course.

I donīt think the issue will be the actuall main explosions, but rather how the boat is exploding with debri parts and having those hitting the water too, I think such stuff is what sells the shot, it is those partīs that interact seamless with the surrounding live phootage that does it.

and if one decides to go for turbulence...thereīs also these...though I think liberty3d should make previews of the blasts and publish more directly accessable on vimeo for instance, right now it is only acessable in a two way click to get acess to a sample mov that you often need to download first.
