View Full Version : ??? Popular UV mapping image: just widespread, or generated?

There's an image I've seen used repeatedly, currently in Ivan's ABF UV Unwrap tutorials, which is a rainbowy+ numbers thing that helps in aligning etc.

Where does that image come from? Is it part of the LW distro, or generated algorithmically, or just a popular bitmap?

Tnx!

...or just a popular bitmap?

You can find a bunch of variants on that image online. I don't know if other apps generate that template automatically. LW certainly doesn't.

Thanks ernpchan.

Marketing-wise, it'd be smart if LW3dG included a LW-specific one so that, painlessly, LW uv maps would spread stealthily thru the interwebz. That is, examples of cool UV mapping would all have a LW connection obvious to the punters.

Plus, it would save their own user base from having to find them themselves. One less speedbump. (I know it seems trivial, but speedbumps add up.)

What would make it 'LW-specific'? A watermark?

Pretty much.

The Video Toaster logo became so iconic-- they should get that person to do it. Or just use the current logo.

It's a little thing, but..... (#gestures vaguely#): it's like being in a building where the door handles have the building's monogram? It's ....complete. Or the perfect buttons on that bespoke jacket. Plus, it really should be in the distro, so that users have all the pieces they need when they're learning UVing.

15 minutes with Photoshop if they use the current logo.

Use Lightwave! :D

Just a few instances and some textures.

I like that in Softimage you always have an image file loaded in every scene, called noIcon.pic. So even when you have no images a checkerboard is there for you. Whenever you check UVs on a mesh it's automatically mapped onto your object and UV space, without changing your surface. If you want a different image, you just choose from the list and both are applied to the view and model for display purposes, again without changing the surface.

LW could do the same, have a single 8-bit image loaded from the installation folder or copied to every scene content directory. Whenever you applied an image in the UV dropdown menu, it would apply to your model, overriding any surface image/color, just to check UVs. Maybe a Albedo viewport display mode wouldn't be bad either.

Cheers
