I would not use anything that sounds like a ED2K.

As far as I'm aware, all the updates on NewTeks site are the full install for LightWave, you just need to d/l the sentinal drivers.

have a read of this:

just to add, without a dongle this method turns lightwave into the 30 day demo, and is NOT a crack / hack or any other way meant to turn LW into a full working version!

Hello Matt

oh I have a fully usable, fully paid for, fully Registered version of LW7.5c.

Just never herd of LW Free Discovery Edition and the ED2K sounds pain full.:(
made me wonder about it all.

saw this thread on TS Form
http://forum.caligari.com/discus/messages/74/14255.html?1069807886

Thought if LW did have a Discovery Edition then LW would have it posted at http://www.newtek.com

Maybe someone can explain this to me because I don't understand it!

WHY bother having a discovery, 'trial' edition, demo, call it what you want, and NOT have a link to it on the site?

You know, with some text that says:

"To experience the power of LightWave, click here to download the demo edition"

Everyone else has 'obvious' trial versions on their sites except NewTek, seems like a missed opportunity to me.

I think NT just forgot to upgrade their "marketing software" ;)

Newtek's behavior seems very strange to me lately.

For example... being incredibly tight-lipped about Lightwave8. Aside from SIGGRAPH, we've barely heard a word.

Prehaps its because Proton and the marketing team are touring the world getting everyone ready for LW[8] that they have never updated there site...

that or NT just dont care about ppl wanting to get into LW *cough cough*

compared to noraml newtek has been positively open about lightwave 8

normally you'd be working away next day you sign on the the internet go to the newtek forums or cgtalk and bang Lightwave 8 released whn you didn't even know if it was in development because newtek was so tight lipped about it all =)

as for the discovery edition yeah they should have a link somewhere - i also think they'd be better off changing the file format that it saves with but leave it able to import lwo's etc and remove the saving limitations - then it would like maya ple can useit and learn all tehre is to learn with instead of being limited

jsut dont go with the huge ugly watermarks argh go with houdini style watermarks

If I were Tim... err Jim... or Chuck, or whoever is running things around there... I'd:

Make an obvious link to the download page for discovery edition on the front page of the website.

Place on the "discovery edition" page some basic tutorials and a few scenes to download and play with.

Cool T-Shirts and other lightwave promo items for sale.
(ones that actually reflect the current release version)

Free T-Shirt that you can only get by upgrading from a previous version. (something with art along the lines of a concert tour, with year/version on it)

A dedicated tech to updated the website, scan the forums each workday, and answer any unanswered tech questions (that don't fall into rtfm) here. Preferably Chuck Baker.

A sticky bug list in each of the "support" forums with confirmed bugs and workarounds. (there's a nice one in the mac forums, Chuck even sort of endorsed it, I don't know why they don't follow that format and make a sticky for each)

Stream Protons vacations... err events, at least the parts where he is demoing. (c'mon guys show us what that toaster can do)
And make downloads

Make Proton and Irene exchange jobs, because I'd rather watch her demo lightwave than Proton. ahem... sorry Proton.

About the ED

I just know that when somebody try finding a piratical software. They will use this, named EDonkey2000, that link would be used for EDonkey. I consider that people use ED is a kind of crime. For the best way to get LW and full service , Do Not try that.
