View Full Version : "Part Move" , but in Modeler / auto-weight-mapping by Connected?

... gahd I hope this hasn't come up a zillion times.... memory sucks as you age...

Thinking about spacing parts out in Modeler, as in an 'exploded view': is there something akin to Denis' PART_MOVE, but not nodal (of course) and inside Modeler?

This would work best with a Falloff value, so that parts moved at different rates:

Radial (by the totality of Selected Parts)

this would be by their original location, not the moved location

or that could be a checkbox
Linear (from a given location, or the mouse location, or background geometry, or the origin...)
Weight Map: this would combine a falloff mode WITH a weight-map, like a multiply.
Curves -- like current falloff options have

In a related question, is there a script that will work thru all Connected geometry and auto-assign a weight map to that set of polys?

There's this but not sure that's actually saving you time since you have to setup Parts.

Ken Nign has a script that'll sorta do what you're asking but it sets up random weight values on each polygon island for a single weight map. Not individual weight maps.

I have yet to run across what you're asking though it'd be nice for hard surface rigging with bones.

We went through this once before.... I'll look for the thread.

You want ONE weight map right? With different, but ordered values for each piece of geometry, correct? (Ken's plug uses random values... but that seems like it might be easy to change. Easy for me to say right.)

From memory a couple of solutions.

1) Sensei has a paid solution. Weighted poly islands.
2) Erikals came up with a ingenious work around. It worked but I never completely understood why.
3) I know you wanted a flexible falloff (still thinking), but for a simple result, there is also moving the last object into place and using Align and Distribute to spread out the other bits.

Aiyeeee, now there's homework! Thank you Mister Ernpchan, Mister Poe, I'll turn it in Monday. ;)

Actually, JP, I was thinking "one w.map per connected set". If someone's starting such a script from scratch, I'd say "make it an option/do it both ways".

BTW, the whole "we went thru this once before", which I am TOTALLY guilty of, is why I'd like a CENTRALIZED updateable documentation system, so such discussions could all be found in one place.

Forgot to put this guy, :D, next to the "Didn't we go though this before...."

AH HA! Found it.

Thread:

... but the discussion evolved over the pages.
Erikals' solution involved blurring the weight map. Post #25.

Not sure if it's still what you a looking for.... One weight map per connected.

These were all neat videos. It'd still be nice to find a way to generate unique weight maps per polygon island.

Sheesh.... I really need to start keeping a physical list taped to the monitor.

Does the latest version, Version 2.0 paid version, work in the current LW 11.6? The free one doesn't.

i don't know actually, haven't tested it in a while, but if the free one doesn't there's a big chance v 2.0 is broken too...
maybe write an email asking > http://mentalfish.com/contact

just haven't gotten around to testing yet...

hopefully LW3DG can add something similar in LW12... crossing fingers...

version 1 looks to work, but bit buggy...
