To hold something against some negative voices in the various LW11.7+ threads I want to share some of my favorite LightWave artists / works with you. When somebody wants to know about 3D artwork this is what I show them. It also motivates me to learn more about art and 3D design in LightWave. It makes me happy to know that the software has so much potential and there is more to come! I'm sure I forgot a lot of you great artists (sorry...) so feel free to extend the list.

I agree wholeheartedly with the initial sentiment of this thread.
Personally, after all these years, I still marvel at what we can achieve when creating in 3D now-a-days. There are very few limits to what can be created... whole new worlds, life and stories that we've never seen before, and all from a little metal box in the corner of the room.

I feel that when people are vocal about what they need/want from the software, it is always going to be from those users who are at the frontier of Lightwaves most intensive and best work. Pushing it as far as it can go, and through doing so learning what would make it better from a work flow point of view in the future.

But we need to remember the silent majority of Lightwave users that get by great with only a few minor gripes and the occasional big one. I know so many LW users who do great work, but you'll rarely see it online because of NDAs etc, or they simply don't have time to publicise anything they do put out, let alone visit the forum regularly.

So anyway, I just want to raise a glass, not only to the great artists above, but also to the many hidden heroes of Lightwave too, I raise a glass to you all! *gulp* You all rock to me. Keep on! :)

And without the work of Allen Hastings + Stuart Ferguson we maybe wouldn't be in this community now! I remember when I saw their names looong ago it in the About LightWave dialog box. I was fascinated what magic software they wrote. Couldn't afford it back then but I knew one day I'll get it; well it took more then 15 years :-)

Larry Schultz- what a genuinely nice guy. The guy actually called me on the phone from Austrailia to help me via this forum. Unreal!

Such talented Lightwave artists. But what makes them stand out from the rest is their unselfish assistance toward others. The likes of Larry, William, Lino, Matt, Erikals, Tim Parsons (snosrap), Greenlaw, DJ, Kuzey, Lewis, Rebel Hill, Mike Wolf, Cageman, DPont, Gerardo, XswampyX, Mr Rid, Pavlov, Iain, Prometheus,Tobian, Kevman, Bee Vee, Geo_n, NickDigital, Svenart, Jennifer Hachigan and Dave Jerrard to name a few.

Agreed :) But does a talented artist who doesn't help anyone come under the classification of "Dark-Hero" ? :D

It gets me thinking actually... who is the most famous Lightwaver? Or at least, who are the most high profile users/studios that are LW based? Maybe based upon most known public work... films/adverts/music videos/TV. I know that this is a bit broad as most probably use many things in their pipeline, but I'm thinking "mainly LW based".

How many LWers are out there anyway? 1000s? 10s of thousands? 100s of?

Guessing 10s of...

Now that's a very good question. I know that Dave Jerrard worked on Sky Captain (but I don't know if he used Lightwave). I know Mr Rid has worked on Loopers and The Conjurer. I know a lot of artists in the lists above that have worked on tv, film, games, etc. But what defines fame when it comes to a lightwave VFX artist, worked on a blockbuster, VFX used in a major TV series (Defiance, BSG, Babylon 5) or effects for a major brand in a TV spot?

Something along the lines of... "The heros Lightwave deserves, but not the ones it needs right now"

On top of this of course, you also have the issue of whether they are the prime creative force behind "such and such", or they have only worked on certain aspects within a team.

It becomes very difficult to single people out in the 3D field. Generalist works, short films are maybe the best place to look... an individuals personal creations where they are the main contributor. It is maybe the only way to make a name that rings any bells. 3D Stills can propel a name too.
I think it is fair to say Chris Jones has achieved this with his works (I know you're on these boards Chris, sorry to talk about you in the third person :) ). Nothing demonstrates range and passion like a personal work. Richard Mans and Abiogenesis. There must be others...

Anyway, I'm ranting a bit at random lol.

O**ity did do some amazing stuff, showing some non-pedestrian uses of Lightwave, like emulating fine art pieces.

Standards in art are very much cherry picked, and a lot of "darkness" is overlooked. Sometimes it's celebrated, like cutting off your ear, other times it's just best left as a bizarre and unsolved gardening accident.
