I was reading issue 41 of 3D Art online a few hours ago. I came across an artist called Graham Symmons [hmm...was he in Deus Ex? :)] .

Anyway, he uses software called Mandlebulb 3D. I am sorry to say that I had never heard of this. So I downloaded it and played with it [ it is a free download!].

Anyone else had any experience with this software? It is at http://mandelbulb.com/2014/mandelbulb-3d-mb3d-fractal-rendering-software/

It looks like a lot of fun! Of course I had heard of fractals and chaos theory. But I had no idea that anyone used this for 3d art.

Here's a little fractal article that I found awhile ago. Cool stuff !

This is also pretty cool. Melinda Green's website (http://www.superliminal.com/fractals/bbrot/bbrot.htm) has a link to a higher res version.

OK. I have no idea what I am doing with this mandlebulb software. I pressed a few buttons at random and made this:

Now, I think that it is a microbial piece of nastiness. That or a garden. Or maybe a plant that just got legalised in some states of the US [ not that I in any way encourage that sort of thing.]

What is it with these suspicious plants? I keep making them...

Tried it myself a ways back. Pretty cool.

Yes. I think that it joins pov ray and blender as the 3 coolest free 3D tools on the planet!

This looks like a really cool talk on fractals at SIGGRAPH this year - I might just attend:

Also, in case you haven't seen it, this is really cool freeware:

I downloaded fractron 9000! :)

Maybe fractals could be the next type of 3D software. When there is no more to be done with Catmull Clark...

yeah fractron is great, however..it seems to have been no further update development to it unfortunatly, and I think I got only crashes when trying to render higher resolutions that would be needed for print.

Those are some nice textures: you could "mine" them for stuff that will render quite a bit faster.
