Alright, so I'm working on my first organic model, and I decided to do a fish. I have a lot of questions on how to accomplish the correct textures, and what the easiest way is to put realistic scales on it.

How would I achieve the correct color gradiants on this thing, and should I try to creates scales first (and how would I do so?) or do the textures first? Can multiple textures be placed on the same surface with different transparencies?

Can multiple textures be placed on the same surface with different transparencies?

This can be done with Weight Maps on one mesh.
Or you can create an image and UV map it to the mesh.
Or you can divide the mesh into areas and assign a texture to each.
Or you might be able to use IFW2 plugin using its regional capability to create the pattern.

How do I go about applying an image as a UV map?

Some sort of fish scale normal map would work...
