I've always seen muscles in CGI monsters, but I've never understood how this is done. Is there a specific term for it, and can it be done in Lightwave?

Never had much luck (or time) for muscles in LightWave but this might help.

I've asked fort a muscle plugin for lightwave for years but it seems I'm the only one interested on this:).
Lino had shown some possibility do make muscles using bullet, but we have not seen more.

If you reffer to "real" muscles like these:

MUSKEELAR ( Free code - Why nobody add this to lightwave? )

MAYA MUSCLE

Lightwave does not have.

In lightwave you can simulate muscles using bones to drive morphs ( endomorphs ) or displacement maps, but it's not an easy task. Multiple morphs with bones deformations does crazy results.

it's a very nice shoulder deformation, but it ain't muscle simulation... :]

once Genoma 2 is out, i might through something together...

That biceps works nicely. Waiting for Genoma 2 too

dynamics muscle simulation ?

Well... to the extent that it animates (and is therefore dynamic), and is automatic (so the user doesnt need to manually control the muscle)... , then yes, ofc its a dynamic solution. If you mean does it employ a "cloth skin"... no... but thats not a pre-requisite in any way for muscle simulation.

Genoma 2? Did I miss something? Is there any info on it?

not sure it will be called Genoma 2, but Lino did say way back that the plan was to add further development to Genoma.
i think that was a year ago or so...

I think it can be done in lightwave but with great difficulty and frustration you probably would have an easier time either sculpting it in zbrush or mudbox or useing Maya

Believe it or not, I heard from people working on the industry that most of the time we seeing studio film reels making use of internal skelegons, muscle systems and so on, it has definetlly a strong marketing porpuse...
