Speed Modelling Challenge #260 - Umbrella

Rules:
1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php
3. LightWave must be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

There are some details you can't really make out such as the metal bars that hold up the canopy, but I'm to lazy to do a closeup render lol.

Here's mine....

24mins for the modelling and a bit longer for the rest.

Just a lot of radial clone, and a bit of heatshrink for the cloth.

About 25mins in, don't have room in my schedule to do any more to it sadly as I had some ideas I would have liked to do to this including adding some gears a chimney stack, chain, pistons etc.
It isn't supposed to be a practical design.

nice look and feel for the lil red umbrella. I like the ground too. Good amount of breakup of the texture with the water areas, nice
i'm new to the heat shrink tool, you made the cloth in another layer and shrank it to fit the rail cloned items?

Thanks Vonpietro,

The cloth is just a ball made slightly bigger than the frame of the umbrella.
Chop the bottom off to get the rough shape.
Heatshrink it down to get the nice rib effect.
Then scale it to fit the support arms.
About 30 secs in all. It's a great addition to the tools. :D

So if you did not get it from the first image...... Could not resist :-)
The logo popped up a bunch searching for umbrella on Google (https://www.google.com/search?q=umbrella&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=JgyBU7ajLpGMqAaGqIDICA&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1920&bih=1041).

XswampyX, could you please explain me how you surfaced the straw, the lemon slice and the cocktail umbrella? Thank you in advance.

It's Octane surfaces, sorry should have mentioned that. :foreheads

Nothing that lightwave couldn't do, but if you have all these toys/tools then you might as well use them.

Would you be willing to share/screenshot your nodes for the orange slice surfacing? I'd be interested in seeing how you achieved the translucency in the center of the slice.

In order of appearance:

VictoryX - A basic umbrella. Good and clean. Could be a little smoother curve on the handle.
xSwampyx - Another basic umbrella ;-) but red. As usual very interesting surfacing. Smooth model with a bit more details.
VIDandCGI - Wow, that's one high tech umbrella! But it just don't do it for me without the pistons ;)
XSwampyX - Really appealing picture!
Shadowlock - Also a basic umbrella with decent amount of details.
MGartist - Lovely paper umbrellas! Simple geometry but very clean and some effort taken to make all the folds.

Overall good quality modeling!

Hmm...
XswampyX or MGartist..
hmm...

MGartist wins! Congrats! You will start a new challenge 4th of June.

Well done MGartist, great modelling.

No problem. It's a grey-scale image as a transparency map. I hand edited it to erase the centre.

Thank you all! I was lucky to have a couple cocktail umbrellas and I realised how complicated they are only when I tried to model them :) I couldn't model them as the real thing in an hour, so, I ended up making the paper parts simple separate objects.
