we are not talking about the space shuttles in armageddon now do we:)

interesting read, though I think I figured it out long ago that it canīt be all keyframing and it of course has to do with weight etc, but funny to see how some movies employed some vfx on aeroplanes that looks just ridiculous when they turn and move in the air.

Iīm wondering, wouldnīt it be doable to use flight simulators and get some way to export that data in to lightwave etc, I think I raised that question long ago..not sure if I got a decent answer for it at that time though...just a thought, it might
not be of good use anyway though... when you need special direction of where the aircraft flies.

At BlackHawk down making of vfx people talk about how they analyzed the choppers to know how to animate them. Like this, it's not only rotate on heading, parenting and move. Nice link

He went into what seemed like a roundabout discussion of 'angle of attack,' which helps animations in a big way. A maneuvering aircraft or one at low speeds, points its nose above the actual flight path. In some cases, this can be extreme. Get this and the pivot point right, and you're well on your way.

Landings are almost always more dynamic than animated ones, as well.
