Quick Q:

Can't believe I've never run into before, but have a small prorblem with a solution that I bet exists...

I have a scene with LOTS of nulls keyed to move, shrink, enlarge, etc., and they have hypervoxeled surfaces. They eventually interact with a larger multilayered object in the background.

The client is making me re-tool most of the scene (object in background has changed), and these nulls need to be moved to new location- but with same timing, motion, location on new background object, etc.

Is there a way to isolate and group the nulls, relocate them to new spot, and "re-activate" them in their new home?

If there were only a couple of nulls, I'd probably just redo them by hand, but like I said, there's alot.

I've tried shifting them with Graph Editor, etc., found some lengthy work arounds, but as usual, when I ask around here, someone always has a solution that cuts my work literally in half.

I'm still on LW 9.6 (stop laughing). I'm hoping to upgrade sometime before the next Olympics.

Thanks in advance!

Tyler

Why not parent the whole mess to a Master Null?

Try "Scene-Parent" https://www.lightwave3d.com/assets/plugins/entry/scene-parent/

Hope it helps :)

"Move Path" is your friend mate:)

All great suggestions guys, thanks. I knew mastering a null could work, but there we're just so damn many of them and I thought there was an automated widget out there .

Always appreciate everyone's input.

Thank you!

Select nulls > Utilities > Lw_creategroup

parents all selected to new null > then move this null into new location

Select nulls > Utilities > Lw_creategroup

parents all selected to new null > then move this null into new location
Is that a thing already, or are you suggesting a workflow???

Hmmm....SEARCHING the Layout Menu Editor I find "Object Mesh Group ID", which manifests as "Mesh Group". What does that do??? :stumped:

What's wrong with selecting all the nulls and using move path to move them?

Not that it may be relevant in this case, but AFAICT, MOVE PATH lacks any rotational option.

If all you needed to do was Move, great. But if any rotation were required, you're back to parenting.

EDIT: obvious Feature Request fodder here: "Please add rotation options to MOVE PATH."
EDIT 2: rotational options:

indicate object as pivot
use mouse as pivot
use designated UI element as pivot
axes restriction
(others?)
(scaling?)

Probably would be a good idea, each time, to enter a thread into the Feature Requests Forum (http://forums.newtek.com/forumdisplay.php?27-LW-Feature-Requests), or they probably won't be seen by Devs at all. LW3DG doesn't have time to wade through all of these forums in the hopes of finding a nugget that they may think would be good to add.

I think you must fogbugz(it's not only for bugs) it to be sure someone in the development team sees it.
