View Full Version : Timelapse skies

I started to record a couple of timelapse sky animations the last days with my Camera. Primary, they are for use in my 3dscenes as a background, but If someone is interested, I also can publish a few of them soon.

one example:

The first row of tests have been recorded as hd movie with Sony Nex5R. To increase the quality and resolution, Iīm now shooting single frames with timelapse App from Sony.

If you have any tips or suggestions how to improve, please let me know.

You do know we are manic for some good cloud work, round here lately?

All LW?

Publishing would be most appreciated.

Nice animation. Manically speaking... ;)

Thanks svenart, that is nice, I need some of that for some background testing later, propably mappe on some spherical geometry or cloudplanes and trying to get ground shadows from it too with some trickery.

You should have ran a bulldozer over the buildings and trees first though, to get a clear view on the horizon:) or take a trip to some desert plain to avoid them:)
It would be great if you can get photage of timelapses without ground object interferance, it will be more useful that way...though I understand that isnīt easy to find places and also the right cloud/sky.
Anyway thanks for sharing.

Svenart, what's the time interval you take between the shots? Perhaps you can take them in 5MP or 9MP non-aliased JPG's. That's plenty of resolution for full hd. If you take 9MP you can even zoom in if you like.
I've learnt that 5 or 10 seconds is a nice interval. This depends a bit on how much wind there is.

@ prometheus: thanks. I will try to upload a cleaned version of one of this skies in the next few days for free download. I will also search for a more flat place here with less annoying objects wich are blocking the horizon. I like your idea with the bulldozer, but I doubt my neighbours will like it:)

@ Cobrasoft: In the first few tests, I recorded movies and increased the speed between 5000% and 10000%. Meanwhile Iīm shooting single frames with a interval of 5 or 10 Seconds or between. With the Sony Nex I can take photos with 14MP in 16/9 or 16MP in 4/3 format.

This is a first in a new row of skylapse videos. Instead of recording them in 1920x1080 as a movie, Iīm shooting now single frames with a timelapse App. The Images are now much sharper, more detailed, less compressed and with 14megapixel much larger. I also could eliminate some kind of color flickering.

Taken with Sony Nex5R, ND Filter, Sony Pancake 16mm 2.8
