View Full Version : Any way to convert .MDL 3D files to .OBJ?

Using Quick3D Professional, it won't convert to anything due to it not being a quake model, and using ModelConverter X doesn't even work due to it not even loading into the program. Is there a way to convert .MDL models into .OBJ? Or just any model converter for .MA or .SMD files? Quite frankly, I'm tired of downloading countless converters each with their own error messages and I'm willing to convert them even if they lose their animations or textures. Any help on this would be wonderful since there's no such thing as a free converter that offers anything and it's frustrating each program can't even convert a single file.

Edit: 3D Object Converter doesn't work either.

I think it is safe to bump this after it has fallen off the front page.

Are you a LightWave user? Just asking because you are in a forum for LightWave 3D, so perhaps that is why you received no feedback. I had a look on Google for you and one of the first links lead me to: http://www.chaosincarnate.net/cannonfodder/cftools.htm. It also seems like Blender can open .SMD files.

Perhaps "free" is the problem here. Spend some money and buy a professional converter.

I checked on this and there are a number of online converters that should do it. Deep Exploration can read them if you can find a version earlier than the current.

Quite possibly, since all the free ones have been gigantic disappointments. Is there one program for everything? Which one is the most reliable?

Right, since I ultimately want them to be converted to .obj or .lwo, it would've been a better choice to put this on a 3d forum less specific. Cannonfodder looks neat, although it's so old his forums, etc. are gone, and Blender is free (I think), so that looks like it might actually work. If not, I'll try solving issues in earlier programs.

Yeah, on websites? I've tried one or two, equally error-filled. I'll check that out since my Google didn't mention any exploration of deep oceans, ha.

Thanks everyone so much for the suggestions, I'll get back to you if there's any more errors.

Importing to Blender is the way to go.
I did it a few years ago using a script.
try this -

After finishing downloading Blender, I was shocked how I was unable to figure out how to do anything. No idea how to use the plugin using Notepad or Notepad++, and my unfamiliarity with Blender makes me unable to find where the plugin would be and how to use it, and Google isn't being really helpful on where the plugins are located, since the "Scripting" menu doesn't have an 'Update Plugins' button anywhere visible. Hell, even my inability to read and understand the plugin's script as nothing more than gibberish makes me unable to find a way to run the script with an object. It really sucks being this dependent on you guys, but you gotta start somewhere when even Google isn't helping, amirite?
