View Full Version : Cutting a Path in a Cylinder

I've seen this done numerous times but can't find examples now I need it!

I have a cylinder that I've tapered in various places. I've created a loose spiral spline that loops round it a couple of times but doesn't sit perfectly on top of the cylinder. I now want to cut the spline's path into the cylinder.

Can someone give me a pointer?

There are several ways to do that. This is one. Extrude the spline. Move the extruded points back to the original positions and scale them in. Then do a solid drill.

Brilliant, worked like a charm. Many thanks Every4thPixel!

Another quick one - after I Solid Drill I'm left with additional points on the Cylinder where my cutting object was. Is there a way to do this without adding those points? There doesn't seem like a way to select them in the Statistics window to delete.

Try Point Statistics -> 2 Polygons.

Unfortunately not dee, it takes pretty much all the points away.

Be careful :) The points around the top and bottom of the cylinder are also 2 poly points.

After you boolean always do an auto merge. Now try point statistics > delete points associated with 2 polys as dee said. But deselect the points at the top and bottom of your Cylinder first.

Did that but it didn't work. Just tried again with a fixed 1mm merge - success! Thanks for the pointer or I wouldn't have thought to re-try merging
