View Full Version : How can I do beams of light spreading out?

I'm trying to simulate light beams or radio waves radiating from a couple different sources (see image). trying to get a more natural look, almost like uniform waves of light and I need them to go from the source and continually move out throughout the animation. Mine are ok, but instead of them just being straight id like the light waves to be curved a little and look more natural.

The way I did it is i made a transparency image of some faded lines and applied that to the transparency of the surface of the light waves, then to animate them moving out I set an envelope for the position of the image, starting at 0 for frame 0 and moving to 15m for the last frame of the scene

Natural look means using inverse-square law.

This is proper procedure of making animated light waves:

While there is nothing wrong with the answer Sensei has given, and seems to be actually very correct... you could just use the ripples texture. The spacings a bit off, but it might not bother you.

Good for quick static waves. But how do you want to animate it? Changing texture position doesn't seem to work - it doesn't change wave start angle..

It's self animating? Edit :- scrub the time line and it moves. :D

Thanks for all your help guys, this is great!

Ah, right. I had Wave Speed 1.0 and it didn't want to animate. With much much smaller I see effect.

I have made video tutorial of mine approach, which you can see here

To mine taste 3D Textures Ripples are too close each other.

I wonder if theres a way to add some volume to these radio waves? Maybe use Sensei's method and use a 1/4 hemisphere instead of a 1/4 disk?

Actually, trying same effect with volumetric spotlight instead of 1/4 disk! I'll let you know my results

Had to tweak a couple things but works fantastic! Thanks again!!

Change the scale.
