Sadly, I don't think there is anything out there that works with LightWave in the manner shown in the GMH2 video.

IMO, the LightWave compatible system that's closest is probably FiberMesh in ZBrush--there you can group locks of hair using Polygroups, which can sort of give you a comparable level of styling control. But, while this technique makes it easier to brush and style long hair in FiberMesh, it still requires a lot of practice, skill and patience to get it right.

The Maya script demoed in the video treats hair as a modeling task as opposed to a 'grooming' task, which seems simpler and more intuitive to work with. That's not a knock against the FiberMesh system--TBH, I think an artist can achieve more organic realism using FiberMesh. But when you're in production with a tight deadline looming, speed and predictability can have greater value, and GMH2 appears to have the edge in that department.

I would love to add something like this in my current fiber/hair styling toolkit--I like the variety of hair tools we have now (FiberMesh, FiberFX Edit Guides, FiberFX Modeler, Rail Cloning, etc.) but I don't think any of them can compare to what's shown in the GMH2 video for speed and ease of use. Hopefully, there is a talented LightWave-friendly programmer out there who is looking at the GMH2 video and going "Hmm. I can do that." :)

It's a pay course but well worth it if you ever need to do this on a job. I really wish I had taken this course before I was assigned to create hair styles for the characters in that Devil May Cry theatrical trailer a couple of years ago.

Yeah thanks for that Greenlaw, I'm thinking of signing up to Digital Tutors for a few months to get at the Zbrush stuff and Fibermesh is one area I'd like to work on. I'm currently spending a month on Lynda.com getting more comfortable with Cascading Style sheets. Its a little more exciting then watching paint dry.

While you're at Lynda, check out their introductory ZBrush course--if you're new to ZB (as I was at the time,) the course is pretty decent. I was originally on Lynda for something else but took the ZBrush class while my time was still active. The Digital Tutors classes are really good too but might be overwhelming for a beginner since there are so many classes to choose from. I found it really helped to have some ZB foundation before diving into FiberMesh.

I'm not new to Zbrush and I've used Fibermesh quite a bit but am always looking for new material to gain any insight I can on it.

Oh, good. The DT FibreMesh for Long Hair course should be very interesting then--I got a lot of good tips and tricks from it. :)
