Last I read the plan was to not attend siggraph because it takes time away from development. I agree with this; good presentations and demos take a lot of time to set up.

I didn't see NT on the floor plan. Looks like we'll need to wait till next year for LW12. :)

I'm hoping to attend via conference select this year. I'm not sure yet though, as Vancouver is significantly farther than LA... heh

To be fair I don't understand the whole idea of siggraph to promote software, only well informed geeks go there and they're...well informed about the software and what they need, some trade show won't change this unless you'll show some groundbreaking stuff, but at the same time you can show that stuff online and have better exposure? Better to save some money on dev I think.

People go more for the networking. Nothing beats meeting people in person, specially top of the line people involved in the cg world.

You get to talk to the top people involved in the development of your favorite apps. This is no ordinary trade show, and you get to meet the top people in most companies. And as a company you get to see the trends of what is coming a few years down the pipe. The SIGGRAPH paper presentation are pure gold.

I'll be there. I guess I'll be wearing my "The Foundry" t-shirt.....unless someone for LW3DG wants to send me a Lightwave one ? :hey:

The conference is in Vancouver. NT tends to avoid conferences outside the US. I believe they were NOT in Vancouver 2 years ago.

No they were meant to be, but didnt show.
In Vancouver, if you tell someone you use Lightwave, the usual response is "oh is that still around?"
Not that it would change anything however. Here you use Maya or youre unemployed

I can relate.
I have a bud of mine who is a Maya animator training fora Job on C4D.
And I get these constant rants from her on why I stick with LW for VIDEO WORK!

Anyway, I can understand why NT decided to skip this one.

Yes, I am going to. I used to live in Europe, and I always hoped I'd have the chance to someday attend Siggraph - since 7 years I live in Vancouver, and Siggraph came to me! :-)

We need to develop a secret handshake or something so we know who each other are.

Well at least some LWers are coming to Vancouver. So if the ones that are coming like beer here is some of my personal preferences for GOOD beer in Van. http://steamworks.com/ a nice brew pub 5 mins walk from Siggy (just head toward Gastown you can't miss it) http://www.greenleafbrew.com/ new brewery across the harbour from Siggy (hop on the "Seabus to Lonsdale Quay) and get a "growler" good beer, http://www.mjg.ca/ Yaletown Brewpub good beer and really good food (a short 5min taxi ride from Siggy) http://gib.ca/# OK Granville Island has lots to offer food, beer, touristy stuff...hop on the water taxi and explore its all good and the beer is really good too (10 mins by taxi from Siggy) And last but not least http://parallel49brewing.com/ these guys make GREAT beer ( "Lord of the Hops" is my personal fave) they are just on the out skirts of Van maybe a 10-15 min taxi ride but well worth getting a growler full. These are just some of the great BC (Canadian) beers in the area, remember "Life is too short to drink bad beer"

Cheers

Chris

If you need any further info please just ask

any news on Newtek's presence this year?

Newtek didn't have a booth at the last Siggraph that was held in Vancouver so I think it's pretty safe to assume they won't have a booth this time either.
