I would request that the OpenGL display of the brush be color coded depending on what mode you're in. If you're in addition mode it should be red, if you're in smoothing mode, green and if you're in subtraction mode, blue. ... similar to 3dcoat. It's a good visual cue and should be fairly easy to implement.
