Is it possible (or is there a plugin) to automatically 'merge' or 'boolean' a selected set of 2D coplanar polys which intersect each other?

Not at the computer at the moment but i think LWCad does this.

Yes, Booldozer works well for this!
There is even an "align" button in case things are not perfectly coplanar.

Use the backup button though. The cutting/joining processes are done through a sequence of actions, so undoing might not get you back to "square one" ;) cleanly.
