View Full Version : Which method for vehicle rigging?

I'm trying to determine which method is the most efficient currently for car rigging. So far I've found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Q3LVIA7fM, which is a series of 7 videos and uses a lot of nodal rigging. Then there's a plugin called Vehicle Rigger that is free and seems to give good results but it seems to have been discontinued, so I'm not sure if it works in 11.6.1 or if it will work in future versions of Lightwave.

Then there's Lino Grandi's video on using Genoma to rig mechanical objects, although I'm not sure if it can be used for a car as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkrrd5QjvXM

My goal is basically to rig a car and animate it in a way that will look realistic, but not only moving forward and have the wheels be aware of the ground (which I believe raycast was for), but also that it can turn a corner in a city realistically, something that apparently is really hard to achieve. Is there a way?

also over at Lwiki Oliver rigged one of the cars by hand ... you might want to take a look at that http://lightwiki.com/images/jdownloads/screenshots/scene.jpg

Thanks, I had already downloaded vehicle rigger, but I wanted to see if it was the best option before trying it out. I'll take a look at the manual rig too.

Well, at least Vehicle Rigger doesn't seem to work. I followed the instructions in the PDF tutorial and as soon as I hit OK it just stalls. It's keeping the CPU at 8% and it's using 500 MB of RAM, but it's been like that for fifteen minutes and this is the second time I try. Is anybody using it successfully in 11.6.1?

I rigged another car and it didn't hang, but still it's working far from good. After rigging, the car ends up way below the wheels, so like it says in the PDF, I have to adjust the ride height, which for some reason the rig leaves at over 2000, down to -105. That's so it stays in the right height according to the wheels, but it stills half the car is buried below the ground plane. Also, if I move the main control back and forth, the body moves without the wheels, although it goes up and down depending on the height of the displacement. If I select the steer control, the wheels do nothing at all.

Checking the FAQ I took all the proper precautions and suggestions, so I think perhaps this rigger just doesn't work with 11.6.1.

Update: I tried a third car and used the throttle rigging option, also without much success. It does some really weird stuff like wheels that go around the car and end up above it. Someone who knows can probably fix it to run with 11.6.1. Any brave souls with some spare time?

This one looks great, but as far as I can tell the wheels don't roll when the car moves forward or backward. But I'm sure there's a way, right? Where can I find more info on this? I have a feeling that raycast is the new feature that would help me here, am I right?

I haven't tried vehicle rigger in 11.6.x, so I can't help you with that. I did use it on a project a few years ago and it worked great then.

Raycast won't help with the wheels rotating. The Dr Wheel Rotator feature in Relativity might work for you. (see video)

I thought about Raycast based on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MFQ8yU-2N0&feature=player_detailpage#t=30

But I'll try to ask Dr. Wheel Rotator. If he doesn't know maybe he can get on a conference call with the other doctors and all of them together will come up with something.

OK, so Dr. Wheel definitely works to get the wheels moving. Now the part that is more complicated is to make it turn a corner in a believable way.

I got vehicle rigger to work in 11.6.1 but it took lots of trial and error and the body of the car was always underneath the ground plane.

Maybe because I bypassed the displacement on the terrain bit?

Anyway... Of I grabbed the weight control or something, and dragged it way above, it brought the body to where it should be.

I have got a nodal motion flow for the rotation of an item based on the traslation on the z axis. Bue the easiest way is this: https://www.lightwave3d.com/assets/plugins/entry/wheel/
It works perfect. Over screamernet also, not like the relativity doctor.

Thanks, I downloaded it and installed it, and I see the dialog for it in the motion properties, but I have no idea how to use it. Any pointers, tuts, etc? I found some references to it doing a Google search but nothing that helps me understand it. Of course I'm not an experienced user, so there's a lot of Lightwave and 3D in general I don't know yet.

Dr. Wheel seems to have a problem moving the wheels when the car is turning, but I really like the rig in that Aston Martin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mfNxi-Y21E&feature=youtu.be

There you can see how the wheel controllers rotate up to the corner but then the front wheels kind of stop, go backwards a little bit and start rolling again when the car goes straight again.

Yeah, that's the easy part, but then when I make it go to a target it just starts spinning and then the wheels rotate in a weird way, ending up on top of the car.
