View Full Version : Question about Loading OBJ Files

I have an exported OBJ file from Daz3D. The OBJ file contains hundreds of groups, which represent the different objects in a large city scene. However, when loading in LW, it doesn't ask me to separate out the groups as separate objects or layers so it ends up being one massive single object. If I export as FBX or Collada, it asks about separating into separate layers, but neither of those formats imports without significant errors in the geometry or placement of objects so it ends up being unusable.

Is there a way, without tediously separating out the objects in Daz, that I can import an OBJ file and have it separate them out? Or a way to automatically fix the issue once the single object is already imported?

I am using Lightwave 9.6.

Big week for this plug (I've recommended it twice :D).... https://www.lightwave3d.com/assets/plugins/entry/connected-poly-to-layer/

Just learned this about it too.....If nothing is selected, all parts are moved. :hey: (which, in hindsight, makes all the sense in the world ;D)

Thanks. I'll have to give this a try.

For some strange reason the obj importer doesn't ask how you want to import your models. You have to go to options and choose your preferd settings before you start the import. There is an option for load obj as one object be sure you don't have that activated.

You could also use the 'connected to layers' command to distribute all separate parts to individual layers.
