#awayfrommachine Another thread made me wonder this:

There's three things I can imagine wanting to do w/Instances:

'Freeze' all the instances into one big Object
'Freeze' all the instances into separate, Transformed Objects (i.e all at 0/0/0)
'Freeze' all the instances into separate, 'pathed' Objects

I suspect at least one of these is a basic function, but what about all of them?

haven't tried them, but check... >

bake_instance.py and toggle_instance.py ...found here... >
C:\Program Files (x86)\NewTek\LightWave11.6\support\plugins\scripts \Python\Layout\Generic

There is a script that comes with Lightwave called Python Bake Instances. If you select the object that is being instanced and run the script all the instances will generate real copies of the object. I think that covers number 3. For number 1 you could export your Lightwave scene as an fbx file and then load the fbx file into modeler. You get an option to load all objects into 1 layer. I am not sure what you mean in your item number 2 though.

transform instances with displacements, think i recall Graham Fyffe claimed it could be done... (?)
edit: yes, it can be done. you can displace an instances using MDD,
but not with LWinstance, only with HDinstance or DPinstance (so hope NT adds this soon)

so LightWave bake_instance will probably not save those... (HDi / DPi)

also see > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rfl6I0N9YU

but i assume bake_instance saves the scale/rotation/position...

Seems like there's several routes, good, thanks fellas.

lertola2, by "'Freeze' all the instances into separate, Transformed Objects (i.e all at 0/0/0)" I meant: create an object that has a path of one [email protected]/0/0| 0/0/0 0/0/0.

Contrasted with #3, "Create an object in a scene that is equivalent to a given instance (or all the instances), but with keyframing to place it in the proper loc/rot/scl." In this case the feature would generate a SCENE file, and reference the existing Instance Source.

So, #1 and #2 create OBJECTS and an accompanying Scene, but #3 creates only a Scene.
