Speed Modelling Challenge #244 - 3D Typography

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
(For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php
3. LightWave must be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

This week's topic: 3D Typography.
It can be logotype, any text, tag etc. - it can also contain elements that is not text, like ornaments or so.
Please look here for examples: GOOGLE IMAGES!! (https://www.google.pl/search?q=3D+typography&safe=off&client=opera&hs=GRl&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=RnjWUsqBLYGq7Qb7oIGYBw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1577&bih=834)

Time Limit: 60 min.
Deadline: Wednesday 22th January, 2014 23:59:59 GMT

Ok, I think I got the concept behind this one...

Nothing fancy here...LW's Logo button, LWCAD's Mass Round tool. 10 minutes. Couldn't get dynamics to help any, so every letter is positioned by hand in layout, and some cheesy VFX added.

01-16-2014, 04:53 AM
Kryslin, you nailed it :) and you have 50 min. to make it more complex & funny!
Good start and I hope for more great entries! :)

01-16-2014, 01:32 PM
Great concept ANS.

And no excuses for not getting an entry done with something this quick.

Modelled in Lightwave, rendered with the Lightwave -> Octane plugin.

All right you guys ... now this is a first. Finally had some time to actually do something for a contest. I probably haven't followed the rules to the dot, as I have used some 5 minutes of ZBrush for a deformation (LW's falloffs still drive me crazy sometimes). Logo tool, LWCAD rounder, a lot of modify with fall off. Modelling time around 40 mins. Rendered in LW with a teensy bit of toning in PS. Hope you like it. P.S.: as a long time lurker I really have to thank you guys for all the help you've provided over time. Seriously THANK YOU!

One more thing ... used dp filter for the lightstreaks. That is NOT Photoshop!!

(Old image, not valid for entry...)

I should have another entry coming...

01-20-2014, 01:35 AM
My entry first in a long time, modeling time approx 30 minutes give or take a minute. Got the reference from the google search provided. In retrospect I should have done the words 8-Bit instead of Model, but eh hindsight ya.

Nice one, Slartibartfast!

119505 119506

fracture tool is here too :)

01-22-2014, 04:35 PM
Nice Entries All!!

So the modeling took me just under an hour. It was the trying to get the dynamics to act like I wanted that took forever.

01-22-2014, 05:22 PM
No wires to show for this week :D

01-22-2014, 05:34 PM
last one from me.

Akaracquel, you and your choccolate writing wombat !! :) :D :hat:

01-22-2014, 05:35 PM
You are a strange bird Ayca. Or strange wombat maybe.

01-22-2014, 07:23 PM
A little overtime and not completely finished...:
119461 119462
That's interesting: how did you approach that??

01-22-2014, 07:35 PM
1:20 model time.

I used to draw this all the time as a little kid. I think I was better at it then....

01-23-2014, 10:52 AM
I know this one is late but I decided to post.119540

01-23-2014, 11:29 AM
Quick declare a winner before bellmore posts anymore. :)

Nice work all!!

I know it was over time but would love to see your wires JoePoe.

01-23-2014, 12:54 PM
Kryslin: simple, but good lokin' :) there still room for something more complex.
XswampyX: Cool looks cool! really. But no wires? and Grass- great idea, great render, again no wires..
dsoell: I really like it! looks dynamic, modern, interesting light pattern... and no wires?
Iain: Good concept with pistol, trigger at first is invisible (i spot it on wires first), DOF/Hyperopia is ok.
bellmore: our hero! very productive! wow! all nice! wow! such numbers! wow! :) Metallica, Creep, sign to nowhere, lost, impaled Lightwave (it's a suggestion? :)), grateful dead, good time roll, scrabble, mirage, push, brain, H2O, smash, back, kind... are I don't forget anything? :) 15 entries. It's speedmodelling record, for sure. But there no numbers are important, only the appearance of entries. There are a room for improvements.
jonbee: good, orginal idea! and nice letters.
VictoryX: you right: 8 bit was better choice for word, but anyway- it's looks good, and clean model!
Slartibartfast: I like it a lot! simple idea, matching blocky lettering, good lokin' ice and very good, clean wires
Wittywop: you smashed it :) good wires, better than render.
Akaracquel: as hrgiger says, you're strange wombat :)
Joe Poe: I like your shark letters a lot- gtreat render, but it's overtime and no wires.

Winner: Slartibartfast.

And great job, everyone! :) so:
and do more great works! :)

01-23-2014, 01:05 PM
That's interesting: how did you approach that??

It's quite simple: start from ball, divide it to hemispheres and with bridge tool- make capsule lookin' object. Next- duplicating, transform and booleans to join them and making letters, there was a lot work with fixes and repairing mesh after booleans ;/ at end- adding loops here and there - for better edges in subpath mode.
paint splashes- letters was duplicated, then cut with knife tool for apriopriate parts, unnecesary polygons have been removed, then- extruded with multishift tool. After this some tweaking was done to form paint stains.. that's all.

01-23-2014, 01:36 PM
Slartibartfast: I like it a lot! simple idea, matching blocky lettering, good lokin' ice and very good, clean wires

wohoo! Thanks a lot ANS! I showed my picture to my supportive family. Or so I thaught... All they had to say was: "what is IOE?" LOL :D

I'm happy to see this challenge is beeing so crowded again! Good work everybody!

01-23-2014, 01:41 PM
Congrats Slartibartfast. Verhy nice model you got there.

Yes I have a lot of room for improvement. I started with Lightwave 7 and gave it up after 2 days and made my way over to MAX. I decided to try Lightwave again and upgraded to 11. The hardest thing for me is knowing what I want to make without relying on my MAX background. That approach does not work very well. I find myself only using a fraction of the tools in modeler, bevel, extrude, connect, etc, the very basic tools. I am slowly going through the manual to get used to all the other tools that I have yet to use. This challegne was the first time that I used anything associated with text in Lightwave.

01-23-2014, 02:15 PM
Good job all!

Slartibartfast, congrats! ... IOE :D

Aka..... ;D

Wittywop.... my wires. And a slightly better texturing/render :hey:.

I like the shark JoePoe! When I see the animal planet-animals made up of letters, I always think I'd try that. Never did though. Thx anyway! And thx bellmore! Keep practising, you will get very far with just those basic tools you mentioned!

01-24-2014, 02:19 AM
That shark text is tops, Joe.

01-24-2014, 01:12 PM
ANS, you won last week, so you may start the next challenge, while I figure something out to next wednesday.

01-25-2014, 10:53 AM
Me? Again? What have I done wrong that I must once again lead the competition? :)
anyway, please look here: Speed Modelling Challenge #245 - Drawing tools (http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?139844-Speed-Modelling-Challenge-245-Drawing-tools)
