Speed Modelling Challenge #242 - Alien Tech

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
(For wireframe help go to: http://http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php)
3. LightWave must be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

:alien: This week's topic: Alien technology. :alien:
It can be any alien machinery, vehicle, building, robot, cow abduction device, weapon or it part. So more "alien :alien:" and weird - then better! :)

Time Limit: 60 min.
Deadline: Wednesday 25th December, 2013 23:59:59 GMT

Hmmm, it appears some Doctor fellow left this lying around. Afraid to touch it, though...

(According to my desktop stopwatch - 0:59:45.73. Lots of bevel, extend, and boolean union/subtract. Took longer to surface, though...)

12-26-2013, 05:47 PM
Did we want to extend and bevel this out to another week? or should I post a new one?

I hope you all had a fantastic holiday! :)

12-26-2013, 06:18 PM
May extended... what do your guys think?
Great model, Kryslin - and only modeling time counts. So texturing, lighting and scene setup- here your can spent as much time as your want.

12-26-2013, 06:21 PM
I vote for extruding an extra week. Too busy traveling and entertaining 4-year-olds over here ...

12-26-2013, 11:53 PM
I shall be magnanimous and graciously vote to extend this a week. What's the point of winning if you're the only one who entered...?

12-27-2013, 11:06 AM
As everyone want... :)
New deadline: 01.01.2014 :)

Think I went about 10 minutes over on this one. Here is your friendly neighborhood alien examination table.

Alien glasses. Their version of Lightwave doesn't have anaglyph stereo..

12-29-2013, 05:09 PM
Slartibartfast, great glasses! And aliens :alien: use somewhat familiar letters :)
And, here comes my alien :alien: outpost. It's somewhere in Alps :)

1box times 10000x :)
total time 3 minutes including render (",)

12-30-2013, 07:24 AM
119000 a bit more relevant in terms of challenge :)

Great idea, Online Render! Looks like alien superstructure!
May i ask your how your achieve such effect?

12-30-2013, 08:26 AM
http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?139428-no-idea-might-build-upon-it <<>> thread here ....

simply just displacement map over 10k cubes :)

this will give you the foundations for it ...

And here I thought it was instancing, with the Y-scale being driven by noise... Hmm, something to try...

It's a little trickier to set up, but it does work. Alas, when I set it up for 10,000 x 10,000. I got a stack overflow and lightwave decided to take a break. (If I can duplicate it, I'll fog it so whatever it is can be nuked.) Before Lightwave dumped to desktop, I actually had something looking a lot like Minecraft's terrain!

Update on River Song's gun :P

Trying to crack the geometry of this intriguingly weird alien flower in the yard each morning.

Hey, folks.

So -- I had a vision of Darth Vader walking a dog and using one of those retractable dog leashes. Of course, the leash itself would be the light of his light sabre and ... well, it seemed like a funny idea at the time. It came out looking more like a blow dryer ...

It's time for competition summary.
Sorry for being late...

Kryslin: dangerous lookin' device, pal! When i look at it, I think about alien nurse with big, terrible syringe... :)
Bax33: and there come alien nurse with Kryslin's device. I don't want to know what she doin' here! :) :alien: nice and simple object, maybe a little too much loops in the end opposite to control panel, and little overtime...
Slartibartfast: yes, aliens have always three eyes and wear counterfeited ray-bans made in china :)
ANS: Move along... move along. Nothing interested here, these aren't the droids we're looking for. :alien: :)
OnlineRender: such a simple idea, and such a good effect. And also opportunity to know something new about LW.
Kuzey: beautiful gun barrel :) I'm sure that complete gun will be quite handsome piece of deadly machinery.
akaracquel: beautiful and completely odd lookin' flower. I'm sure it no blooms even in Australia... But is... flower. It's botany ? Not tech ? Maybe, if he had a hydraulic stem and steel teeth ? :)
Pantagrool: nicely done hai... oops, dog's retractable leash. You're sure it's for dogs, not for AT-AT walkers? :)

Winner: OnlineRender.
Congratulations! And prepare for us great competition when it's your turn :)

Congrats OnlineRender!! You gave me some ideas to try. ANS, thanks for your feedback. I think you are correct. I don't know why I had so many loops at that end. Sometimes I don't see these details I need to. Thanks again.

Congrats OnlineRender and well done everyone!!!

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver, a dangerous device? Pshaw! Let's step into this convenient blue police call box for a chat, shall we? :)
(Actually, I'm not a Dr. Who fan at all. )

Simple wins out in the end. Congrats, OnlineRender!
