I have the physics understanding of a mongoose. I dropped science at school because I couldn't stand test tubes, Bunsen burners...

Where would I learn about the physics of rendering methods? To what extent is it useful to understand this to be able to work in 3D?

It is light reading. In fact it sheds a lot of light on the subject.

Hehhehheh. You made my day! I'll try to think of a few resources.

It is good to be able to grok the reasons behind why things look and behave as they do. If you don't, it is all too easy to wander off into unreality. Now, unreality isn't necessarily a bad thing. Tim Burton has made millions doing it. But if reality is what you are attempting to achieve, knowing how this spacetime continuum works is not only a leg up, it is essential.
