View Full Version : Lightwave to direct x?

Hi guys,
Is there a plugin that can export objects from lightwave 11.6 to direct x?
I bumped into the dstorm export directx plugin for lw but that doesn't appear to work with anything above lw8:(

This might help...

It's been a while since I looked into it myself but I believe Milkshape (http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/)can read LightWave objects and export .x. If it's animation, I think you need to import a LW FBX to Milkshape. Sorry for the lack of details. My memory of this topic is a bit fuzzy--I'm not even sure I remember which project I needed this for. :p

Anyway, I think there's a trial version of Milkshape and if you decide to buy it, it's only $35. FYI, I don't think I ever got around to trying it--got too busy with other projects and need to return to this one someday--so be sure to try before you buy.

Blender reads .lwo and can save .x You'd have to be familiar with assigning maps though if you needed that.

Since this is on the table, I would check if the UV are imported correctly. Sometimes the importer does not work correctly. (So you rather would use obj or fbx for import data into blender)

OK Interesting. I usually don't even import, .lwo as when I am exporting from LW it is always obj. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Alternatively if you really want to try the DStorm plug-in, here's an old thread on how to use it. Yes, you do need LW 8 to run that part of the process but you can still download 8 from your user account.

Personally, I prefer to use newer tools when I can, but hopefully any of the above suggestions will work out for you. :)

Instead of directX you may find other formats just as good or better. In know XNA supports other formats. Bryce can import lwo and export to .x but it doesn't seam to work correctly.
I believe there is a thread in the games subforum of this forum that talks about this issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, I was hoping I could avoid jumping around in various apps but I fear that seems to be the only viable solution currently.

Silkrooster, the object file needs to be in .x because it is a set design I created for monarch's virtuoso virtual set system which can only work .x files:(
