View Full Version : Best tutorials?

I'm a modo user thinking of switching to LW because of LWCAD. Can anyone suggest tutorials? I'm mainly focused on modeling, texturing and rendering. I'm watching Dan Ablan's video on Lynda but that's for LW10.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

A good place to start would be here, https://www.lightwave3d.com/learn/ choose from the categories on the right. Dan's Ablans course on Lynda can probably help get you started on navigating LightWave, not much has changed at least as far as getting around in LightWave and basic functions. There were some new modeler tools added in LW as well as a ABF UV method for producting UV's. Rendering has seen some advancement as well so I would suggest watching Rebel Hills tutorial on Radiosity which will cover some of the new additions such as adaptive Sampling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YFZ2av-BLg

Thanks hrgiger -

I'm proceeding with Dan's tutorial on Lynda and I notice he has a 11 tutorial and a 11.5 tutorial on his site 3D Garage although I prefer the Lynda format because it's tool based whereas the tutorials Dan does on his own are project based.

Rebel Hill looks real interesting (along with having an interesting name) and I see that they have some videos about the nodal system which modo doesn't have so they'll be immediately useful to me.

More than enough to get me going so thanks again.

I sent off an email to LWCAD asking if they had a demo version and got a very quick and courteous reply from Viktor indicating they didn't but providing a link to the videos. I'll probably focus on those right away as it's the lack of LWCAD in the modo toolset that is encouraging me towards LW. I like modo and I think I'll probably like LW as much as I like modo but the simple fact is that modo doesn't have LWCAD and a lot of the work that's coming my way requires the kind of precision modeling that LWCAD seems to be the ultimate plugin for. I work extensively in SketchUp and Rhino but I want a sub d modeler as part of the mix. My hopes are that, with LWCAD, LW won't be cast aside in my workflow as modo often is.

We'll see. Thanks again.

LWCAD is an excellent set of tools and just keeps getting better. LWCAD is the one that that has kept me in modeler for as long as I have been.
