View Full Version : Ribbon that grows

I really suck at LW but I see no other option:

I need a random curled ribbon kind of road. Just floating in space.
I need the option to let the road grow until it's complete.
If I can erase the road from its starting point later on, that would be nice too.

I have had VERY bad luck using a technique morph-over-bone-chain.
I always get unexpected results without ANY chance to repair it.
So that option has to go.

I could just extrude a spline but that would not be easy to wipe in correctly with an alpha.
Loopings would go wrong as the alpha would follow one dimension and not the road shape.

What I can do is bend a strip with a lot of bones, and then move an alpha texture over it to make it grow.
Not sure if I can do a looping that way. I mean if the alpha will follow the road correctly in such case.

Bending a strip with a lot of bones is a tremendous amount of work.

Since there is LW 11 now, is there a easier way to solve this problem?

I need some guidance. (I can't work with UV maps. Sorry)

This could maybe help?

Thank you very much for the reply.

This is a very complex method but it seems to work.
I got absolutely no clue as to what technique is used here.
I do not understand it but I might be able to reproduce it.
What I don't like is building with a motion path; it's not like a model.
It seems this method is a bit of an overkill.
I'm gonna keep this in mind if no simpler method can be found.
The man mentioned Shifter. Maybe that is more for me.
But if everything else fails, your tip might offer a solution I can copy.
THanks.

You could also try DPKit's Spline Deformer.

There's also Shift Spline.

The Spline Deformer looks absolutely wonderful. It's like the first option but more elegant.

However, some questions remain:

A. Will it work in 11.0.3 64 bit
B. Where can I download it
C. How do I install it
D. I don't know where nodes are at or how they work. The technology scares me a whole lot as it seems a very abstract system that I can't seem to grasp.

I think B. has been answered:

This maybe possible also with the new Spline Deformer in 11.6 as shown at Siggraph 2013.

If you download 11.6 (as it should be available in your download section from Lightwave3d.com as it already looks like you have 11.0.3) and the new 11.6 content. In there will you find a directory called SpineControl, which has lots of wonderful examples. The one to look at would be Snake.lws (in 02_Examples) Open it and break it apart to see how it's done, this may assist you in the 'I'm no good at this' area as the scenes are already setup, so you don't have to mess about connecting nodes, etc. so there is less chance of going wrong. Once you've had a play, you should be able to amend the spline into a curling ribbon structure and then change the snake for a long road object.

11.6 Feels like the cleanest and smartest solution. I must solve some registration issues first. The new site says I have 9.X but I have a working 11.0.3. The old European site seems to be gone; I got my 11.0.3 there. I opened a case over at LW support.

They are very good at responding to tech issues.

11.6 Spline Control is not quite like DP's Spline Deformer node.
For your goal, Denis Pontonniers will be nicer I reckon.

11.6 Spline Control will still need bones etc. In itself it is a not a deformer. (sadly)

I don't think I need bones but I may be wrong.
In fact I don't understand why they put a bone chain onto the spline at the end of this tutorial. The spline itself can do all the bending and warping, or am I wrong?

But for a growing ribbon I don't know which one is easier to learn. Seems that in such case, I can't skimp on learning nodes. If one option does give me that choice, then I think I want that one.
