I have a client who is requesting a render in 1920x1080. I asked what pixel aspect ratio and he says 0.88.

Is that correct? I could have just rendered in 1.0 but I want to give him the correct stuff.

Sounds odd to me... But if that's what the client wants... That's what the client gets. Charge them if it requires a redo.

Afaik 1920x1080 is square pixel.

There are 1080 formats/codecs that are like 1440x1080, but I'd think the pixel aspect ratio would be >1.0 for those.

The pixel aspect ratio doesn't change the rendering resolution, though, so they should be able to specify what the number should be in whatever app they're using, so it probably wouldn't hurt to give it to them in .88.

don't know if you've used After Effects: in the "new composition" tab for the "HD TV 1080 (1920x1080)" preset the pixel aspect ratio is (as dwburman said above) square pixels.

There's no option for selecting "0.88"

Hope that helps, good luck.

It's 1:1 - and the frame aspect is 1:1.78

Could be your client missunderstood your question. I guess he told you the dpi and not the pixel aspect ratio.

...which would be almost as bad. :p

Try sending two renders of a still frame, one at 1 and one at his requested spec. Inform him up front duplicate rendering is additional cost. And let him choose again. Stress you are trying to save him time and money by double checking what he wants before committing to rendering.

Possibly he is getting confused with DV? I am not as familiar with NTSC but is the pixel aspect ratio for an NTSC DV frame, 720x480 in 4:3 full-frame is 0.88 just rounded to 0.9?
