View Full Version : Converting Lightwave files

A friend asked if lightwave files (lwo) can be converted to FBX, collada or obj? Ideally FBX.

I'm using Lightwave 11.5 (PC). If I would need anything extra to do FBX please let me know.

Yes, though depending on the format used, it is likely some prepping is needed before the files will transfer properly. OBJ geometry, for instance, either has to be tripled or entirely consistent of planar polygons to transfer reliably from program to program. If your objects contain no UV maps, you will need to generate an Atlas UV map and use the surface baking camera before doing the export.

Thanks. Well it looks like it would be a lwo file that goes into my lightwave where I would convert into a FBX.
Never tried it before and I'm currently away from my system so that's why I thought I should ask.

File > Export > OBJ
File > Export > COLLADA
File > Export > FBX

Or use a dedicated format translator like Deep Exploration, Polytrans, etc. Which will eliminate the step of opening a LWO in Modeler; doing the conversion directly instead.
