When setting up a 3d stereo scene that involves very large objects, what is a good distance for the L/R camera separation? I mean things like landscapes, planets, big space cruisers, etc. Setting them to human scale doesn't make them "pop" enough until the camera gets close, planets of proper scale won't pop just because of the physics of optical, but is there a convincing cheat without separating the camera too much?

That all depends on the scale of the object. If you're modelling them to real scale, then figure out how "big" you want them to be relative to human eye separation.

If you create a planet and you want it to seem like it is the size of a beachball just 6' away, then scale the distance of the eyes by that same factor. Basically, 3" to 6' is X to Y distance. Where Y is known (distance from camera to object).
So, 3" * Y/6' = X in this example. Thankfully LW does unit conversion in the math :)
