Is it possible to do something like an object dissolve on instanced objects? I already know object dissolve does not work, I am just trying to get the objects to fade on instead of just having them pop on into place.

Depends on what you are going for. You can have their transparency channel fade on over time, and adjust timing via instances. I believe you can also use use an emitter to lay out your instances, and then you have have access to 'particle age' in the surface editor and can use that to fade them in over time. Don't quote me on the last one, it's been a while :)
